At the harbor on Capri you purchase a ticket to the Blue Grotto. You are taken to the grotto on a small launch. When you arrive at the grotto you are transferred to a small dory piloted by a rower. You are take alongside a small boat where you have to pay another fee to go into the grotto. You sit on the bottom of the boat and are rowed into the grotto. The rower takes you on two laps around the grotto which is about 100 to 150 feet across. The rower may sing a song or offer to take your picture. The entire experience lasts about 5 minutes. You leave the grotto and are transferred back to the lauch as the rower demands money for his services. The cost of the lauunch is 11 Euros, admission to the grotto is the same and the rower sasks for between 5 and 10 Euros. The total for this experience could be 30 or more Euros or aboiut 45 dollars for 5 minutes in a dark cave with a blue glow around the bottom of the boats in the grotto. You can keep this as it is not worth the effortof transferring from a launch to a dory, sitting on the floor of the boat which can be wet and then transferring back to the launch. Look at the advertising pictures they are much better than the actual experience.

A true tourist rip off.. The boat drivers spend their time asking you for a tip!

We were tossing up arranging our trip to Capri and the Blue Grotto ourselves, thinking we could do it cheaper and not wanting to get ripped off. But after looking into it, taking a tour was a far better option - you see more, it's a great trip out there and you get preferential treatment to get a row boat at the Grotto. The trip takes you to White and Green Grottos before going to Blue Grotto. We only had about 8 people on our boat so it was reasonably intimate. They stop and let you swim in the sea - so take snorkel and mask if you can (they will loan to you but I have an issue with sharing snorkel!).
At the Blue Grotto you pay extra to go into the cave itself which is mandatory no matter what way you get there. The boat men will ask for a tip - but it's up to you if you pay or not. But make sure if you do tip, it's more than 1 Euro - this is more of an insult than not tipping at all. Keep your swimming togs on for the Blue Grotto as you can get out of the row boat and swim in there as well - not for long and it's hard to get back in the boat but it's amazing in there. We felt this trip was worth every cent (June 09 > 70 Euro each)

The trip over to see the Blue Grotto was the highlight of this trip. You got to see the island of Capri and the wonderful waters surrounding it. A great guide on the boat always helps, pointing out near little things. Once we got to the Blue Grotto, however, you must wait to hop into a smaller boat. You spend time waiting in a very rocky boat, only to give more money to go in. Once in, it literally takes less than 5 minutes. I am glad I got to experience but unless you need to see if for yourself, you are not missing anything. If anything, I'd recommend going after it closes and swimming in the area yourself!!

To begin with ignore the touts before and after the boat to Capri offering tours of the Grotto. When on Capri look on the dock for a building clearly labelled as blue grotto, head to that and you will pay about 12 euro's for a boat TO the grotto. To get in once you are there you move to a rowing boat and it's 10 euro's plus a small tip. You spend about 10 minutes in being rowed around and seeing the stunning natural sight. Is it worth the money? Well my partner and I adored it and the guy rowing the boat is great fun but if money is tight then I guess it's not the best value for cash that Italy offers.
