Owner description: The must-see attraction on Capri is the magical Blue Grotto, where visitors take a boat ride through a natural cavern that is filled with an ethereal and eerie light reflecting on the (very blue) water.

I can't imagine a bigger waste of money. The grotto is just 1 small cavern, the water is illuminated blue at the entrance and that's it. Inside takes 2-3 minutes of going in a circle twice and that costs 12.50 euro a person. Plus they ask for a tip.

We took the local bus that goes right there and then you walk some steps down and wait for a boat to take you in. We were there in late October and still we waited. You lay back in the little row boat and the driver pulls the boat into the cavern with a chain (which he let drop on my face). Then once inside he starts marvelling at how blue it is and singing the chorus of Volare. Kill me now. Is all the water blue - no. Does the whole cavern glow blue - no.

I couldn't believe this was what it was. Save yourself - don't go!

Going into the grotto was interesting and the gondola drivers definitely make the experience. We had to split into two gondola's and one was an idiot asking for a tip the minute our party was in and the other one was great. You are inside for only a few minutes. If you have a bad back pass on this experience.

Tour was great, definitely take the 2 hour one - DO NOT go to the Blue Grotto. It is literally just a hole in the wall. DEFINITELY NOT worth the 12 euros per person to get in. LITERALLY just a hole in the wall. Seeing photos of it online are enough. So many boats inside. All the boaters singing terribly. Echoes. Just awful.

definitely see the rest of the tours around the island of capri though. Just don't go into the Blue Grotto.

In October 2013 we visited Capri for 2 days and did pretty much everything. Although near the end of October the weather was still 26 degrees C so swimming still just fine. We decided to take the local bus from Anacapri to the Blue Grotto. It was simple and cost about 1.8 Euros each (you can pay on the bus). The bus goes right to the steps down to the Blue Grotto and takes 15-20 minutes from the bus station at Anacapri.

Once there you get a good view of the water and there are about 100 easy steps down to the water. There is a store and snack bar on the way down the stairs. We were there mid day and there were men in the small boats that take you in to the small water cave. Its only about 60' long and you are in there 5 minutes or less. They charge 14 Euros. We considered it a complete waste of money and you feel stupid that you paid it.

There were several boat loads of Japanese tourists offloading into the small boats and going in. It was the worst site we saw in one month of vacationing in Italy. Try the boat tour around the whole island instead (1 1/2 hrs for 15 Euros) and you get to see the Green Grotto, but not go in. The Green Grotto looked much more interesting and picturesque.

I been there before years ago and as a natural phenomenon; its okay but there are much better wonderment in this world. So right off the bat - this is not a must do. Nevertheless I was there last month with someone who has not been so we gave it a go. I must warn travelers of what I experienced this time.

We bought the public boat tickets at Euro 13 (excluding price to go in;. ok I am fine with this). On the schedule - it says this is an hour and half round trip (plus time to visit the Blue Grotto). The time was 11:45am. We went out to the sea and reach the Grotto entrance. Here the boat man suddenly told us - we need to wait TWO HOURS - for our turn to get in. [what happens is you sit in your boat with 10-15 others- wait for your turn, you are transfer to a small rowing boat that sits 4, and this rowing boat that takes you into the Grotto - 8 to 10 mins tops ]. The reason for the LONG TWO HOURS wait - tide is high and rowing boats cannot get in and we need for the tides to drop. Ok I know from experience, the rowing boat cannot get in at high tides - that is true. But what really bothered me was - why did they not warn us of the long wait when we were buying the tickets. It is not like they DO NOT know the approximate time for the tides. These motor boats ferry passengers by the hundreds making round trip - so by word of mouth - the boat man should have known the conditions. Yet they kept quiet - sold us the ticket then tell us about this TWO HOUR out in the sea. The boat is exposed to the elements - no shade - so we have to bake for two hours, bopping up and down with the current? there are no bathroom facilities, drinks etc. All this for less then 10 min of a natural wonder that really is not that earth shattering. This is outrageous. So we and a couple of others (some who had prior travel plans and counted on only a 90 mins trip not a 180mins trip) - had to hail another boat going back to the Marina Grande. So we wasted our time and money and felt cheated.

If you have to go - please check the weather conditions and the tides. Also ASK them about the waiting time BEFORE you buy your tickets. But better still - just give it a miss - it is nice but not worth hours of wait.
