Golden Days Hotel
Ranked #9 of 18 Hotels in Afandou
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Despite the one grim and obviously bitter and twisted review below, I am happy to report that Golden Days is every bit as good as it was last August when I gave it a five star review after my first visit. We have just returned from a fortnight on Rhodes and although the weather was a bit odd during the first week, we had a lovely holiday. It's always a bit of a worry returning to the same hotel and wondering if it will be as good as you remember it, but we were delighted that everything was as good, and in some cases better, than we remember it. There has been a redecoration programme which has given the rooms and the public areas a real lift and there are several other small but pleasing improvements which further enhanced our holiday experience. The front line staff - Maria, Ianni, George and the new receptionist Nicky, are all super friendly, helpful and considerate and the cook and cleaning staff do a super job in ensuring that it is impossible to find anything to complain about.
Afandou itself continues to be a lively, friendly village with everything you could wish for - loads of great bars and restaurants although the problems with the economy are clear to see with several empty shops, bars and restaurants. We found Sergios and the Four Seasons to be brilliant restaurants - excellent food at very reasonable prices. The Acapulco Bar and the Life Bar are our particular favourites where there is always a warm welcome from Dimitri and Ianni. Having said that, you won't be disappointed if you stay in Golden Days for the evening where the meals are perfect and the company is always great.
So, if you want a holiday that is typically Greek without the sameness of the all inclusive chains, try Afandou and the Golden Days Hotel. You won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: The front of the hotel is noisy but interesting. The back is quieter but there's less to occupy...

A lovely hotel in a lovely situation. Afandou has several great places to eat and is a charming, friendly little town - not really 'touristy' and with food and drink prices much lower than those in Rhodes town or Lindos. Buses leave fairly regularly from the square [about 15 minutes walk] for Rhodes town and Lindos. It is a bit of a walk to the beach, but a pleasant one with an interesting ancient church [and taverna] on the way and several tavernas/restaurants dotted along the beach road. I have had a hip replacement and walk with a stick and I didn't have any problems. Back to the hotel - where everything was clean and well-maintained. The room was cleaned every day with new towels provided, the [small] gardens were well looked after, and the owners - Yanis and Maria - could not have been more friendly and helpful. There is, incidentally, a very well-stocked supermarket almost next door and ATMs in the town. All in all, if you want a comfortable, conveniently situated and relatively inexpensive option, Afandou and Golden Days are hard to beat.

This is the first review I have written, I feel like I had to write one to warn people about this hotel/resort.

Firstly, I am a worldwide traveller-I've backpacked halfway around the world including places like Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Romania... etc and I can honestly say this was the worst place I have ever stayed in for the cost of the holiday.

I went with my family (mother, girlfriend, sister and her partner) for a week and paid around £350 each, which ok, isnt a fortune but I expect a clean basic hotel for that.

Upon arriving at Afendou, the first thing we noticed was the smell-like the back of a bin lorry, there was uncollected rubbish everywhere.

The outside of the hotel looked run-down and a bit sad-first appearances were not good, we checked into our rooms and thats when the problems really started...

The rooms were tiny, run down and generally unclean. We had 3 roms and within 30 seconds we were all back out in the corridor looking at each other in dismay. Here is a short rundown of the problems with the rooms:

1. Very small and extremely dated.

2. Dirty-the tiny bathrooms were filthy, faecal deposits around the toilet and general dilapidation (I wouldnt go in there without shoes on)

3.Upon noticing stains on the sheets, I decided to investigate further: stripping off the top sheets, the bed underneath was a disgrace!! the pillows were yellow with stained in drool and the mattresses looked like they had been stolen from a homeless person. My sisters mattress had blood on it (obviously from a woman sitting on it...). I would not have let my dog sleep on any of the beds...

4. The 'kitchen' area was again a disgrace, the fridge was rank, the whole area was greasy and smelly, there were dead cockroaches in the cupboards (I'm not bothered about roaches, but if there were dead ones in the cupboards then what does that say about the cleaning standards?)

5. The doors to the rooms are extremely flimsy and certainly wouldn't be up to european fire regulations.

6. My sister and her partner are both Phd scientists in micro-biology, they both took one look at the pool and refused to go anywhere near it...

7. The town itself is pretty awful, full of tatty clothes shops and lacking any of the typical restraunts/bars you would normally expect in a holiday resort. Again it had a generally run down feel...

8.Its bloody miles to the beach and there are no pavements to walk on.

After arrival we decided that there was no way we could sty there. I contacted the rep (thomas cook) and she was worse than useless. When she looked at the rooms she first tried to say that they were acceptable, but when I asked her if she would allow a guest at her house to sleep on a bed in that condition she replied 'no' in a very quiet voice.

The real problems started when the 'hotel' manager arrived and started shouting and hollering-he was extremely rude and threatening, a more timid person or woman would have found it very threatening. He asked me if I expected him to get a new mattress just because one was covered in blood? I said yes, or at least clean the blood off the old one...

By this point the rep had gone silent; I think she was afraid of the manager (I dont blame her-I thought it was going to turn physical), she was however worse than useless at getting us moved, when we couldnt be moved we asked for the next flight home-that could not be arranged either. To cut a long story short, I ended up leaving my family sitting in the garden while I headed out in a taxi looking for a new hotel.

We ended up staying in the Georgia Apartments just up the road, which is exactly what you expect for the money-basic and clean.

I know a lot of people are really pedantic on here, but I can assure you: I have stayed in better hostels in third world countries-this really is totally unacceptable. I have no idea how its got so many good reviews?! perhaps people dont know what to expect? or havnt travelled very much?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont waste your holiday by staying here!

We returned to the Golden Days to celebrate our 5th anniversary having married at the Kalithea Spa and holding our reception on the outdoor terrace,as well as the whole wedding party staying there. There isn't a review of that trip as it's one I would rather forget due to the owner of the hotel at the time. When I read on TripAdvisor that Yanis had taken over we decided to get the ferry across from Marmaris for a few days and catch up with old friends. This was the best idea we have had for a long time as it was every bit as the first time we visited back in 2006, when we decided we wanted to get married there. Yanis and Maria are doing a brilliant job and the hotel is as clean and welcoming as ever. I can see us having two centre holidays from now on and splitting our time between Marmaris and Afandou, which despite all the changes is still a quintessential Greek village whose philosophy is to welcome you with open arms, but you live Greek for the time you are there. Thank to all for remembering us, making us as welcome as ever and laying a lot of old ghosts to rest, see you next year hopefully.

Room Tip: Front rooms overlooking the pool and the garden have the nicest views but the balconies belonging to...

What a great holiday we just had. The welcome we received was just like others have said "You feel like you are old friends". Nothing is too much trouble. Ask Yanis Maria, Hayley or George they will help you or know someone who can. The entertainment was just fine kareoke on Mondays was a blast. Everyone made to feel part of something special. Rooms were great the fridge a big plus in the room. Had cold water when wanted or beer or juice its up to you but very welcome. Pool area very clean and relaxing or if you like gardens super for reading a book.. If you want a chat the staff are there if you want to be left alone that's fine too.
Afandou Center 10 min walk past the cake shop or not? lots of little bars with a friendly atmosphere all round lovelyness. A must visit to Sregios the pizza place great value for money.

Can't wait to go back to sing shang a lang know what I mean gang love you lots see you soon Paul n Val xxxxx

If you want to feel part of the community; this is the place to be. Yanis, Maria and George are fantastic hosts. Even in our first few days, we felt like we were meeting up with old friends. We were not looking for spas and high rise hotels; these can be found in any major city, we wanted a holiday with real local people - exactly what we got.
Nothing is ever too much trouble at Golden Days and never did I see any "Oh God" looks, unlike the air stewardess on the Thomas Cook flight. To be fair some of the flight attendants were very nice; the others I feel should stay at Golden Days and learn what open, caring hospitality really is.
It really did not matter what we asked for; it arrived almost like magic; from taxis to delicious breakfasts, the service and quality was consistant, never a bad day. If you are looking for king size beds and false suck ups then do not come to Golden Days; if you want very clean rooms, with changes for linen and towels above and beyond what you would expect at a 2** or even self catering then Golden Days are hard to beat.
If you can take yourself away from the lovely people at this hotel; there are also lovely people in the village, Mimis restaurant offers good food, excellent service and yet another great example of the welcome that the people of Afandou offer holiday makers.
This hotel and resort is a great place to be for those that want to get away from the rat race and enjoy great company; if you want pumping disco morning until night then other resorts would prove better. We went in a group of four; age ranging from 18-50 and all of us formed the same opinion, we will all become regular visitors and at least one of us is even considering living part of the year in Afandou.
A little gem in the hidden village!

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear are less likely to hear traffic; although we were at the front and did not have an...

Sorry it's taken a while but had to wait as I'd written a review in July. Thank you all for another fantastic holiday last September, it was a brilliant week that just flew by, we definately need a fortnight back again as soon as we can.
We are repeat visitors to the Golden Days and plan to continue doing so for as long as we can. The welcome and hugs we received as we arrived back at the hotel, since our last visit in June / July, made us feel "at home" again straight away.
It's already been written, by fellow visitors and myself, about the friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff, how hard working they all are and the cleanliness and fabulous location of the hotel itself. All I can add is try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
Yiannis, Maria, George and Hayley - THANK YOU. Oh, sorry Yiannis but Sotiris is still much better looking than you!!
See you in 2013, lots of love, Chrissy and Graham.
