We got married at the Chateau this Summer and we couldn't have asked for more. What an amazing venue....the location, atmosphere, food and wine were simply magnificant. There is a wonderful balance of french style aswell as having all the mod cons a bride needs on her big day. Everyone had a wonderful three days taking in all the area has to offer. In one word... fairytale!

Room Tip: All the rooms are equally beautiful and the attention to detail is fantastic

We have been dining here for at least five years, and have always been delighted. The setting overlooks one of the "most beautiful villages in France", in an unspoilt countryside. It is an ancient abbey inside a castle, which has retained its sense of history. The current owners, Katie & Peter Lawton, have succeeded in creating an elegantly stylish décor perfectly attuned to its ancestry. Their welcome is warm and friendly - nothing is too much trouble, either for them or their staff. Before dinner, you'll sip an aperitif on the blossom-laden terrace, with its stunning view of the garden with all its trees and a swimming pool and the roofs of the village below forming a backdrop to the chateau. Tom the chef offers a fixed menu each evening from his constantly changing range of signature dishes - these are of mouthwatering quality and full of interest. The tables have been set up in the former abbey cloisters, sheltered but with a lawned courtyard open to the sky. Watching the twilight arrive and the odd hoot of a barn owl add to the ambience. We have not been residents in the chateau itself although we have visited the rooms on the first floor, decorated in traditional French style reminiscent of the C17th. Several of our friends make an annual pilgrimage here in search of tranquillity. The chateau is an excellent base for exploring the Ariege with its Cathar castles, as well as the foothills of the Pyrenees. It is also a stunning venue for weddings as clients have already discovered. This is a place which is remarkably different from brand chains. Our only concern is that such a positive review will make it more difficult to find a reservation there for ourselves in the future.

Definitely a destination not to be missed!

Oh my word - what a magnificent place to idle away a few days - the L'Abbaye Chateau de Camon, is a labour of love, in a magnificent setting - a former monastery, the chateau is in a serene & picturesque village. Close to Mirepoix & ideal for exploring the many amazing attractions in the vicinity. We managed a trip to beautiful Foix, Carcassonne & her Medieval city (a World Heritage site I believe), the Domaine Gayda wine farm & a day trip from Somail down the canal with Belle du Midi cruises. All truly brilliant excursions. Sadly we arrived too late to spend time at the weekly market in Mirepoix, a charming town with some very photogenic buildings.

The Chateau is not pretentious or overdone. It is comfortable, elegantly homely & makes you feel just that little bit special all at once. They have magnificently romantic gardens & a wonderful pool area complete with stylish umbrellas & elegant loungers. The breakfast rooms are perfect. Our party sat in the Kitchen room at a delicatly huge farmhouse table (only in France), although there was another room with pretty tables set or the wonderful outside area for the warm summer months. All very picturesque.

The rooms are beautiful, & tastefully done - our room was not overdone or pretentious but pretty & comfortable, & very much in keeping with the surroundings. Our room, at the top of an impressive spiral stone staircase, had a fantastic pastoral view with the Pyrenees in the distance. Katie and Peter, owners & dedicated custodians of a special piece of history, were hosts extraordinaré. They accommodated our party of 16 with grace & aplomb, & showed a genuine interest in all their guests. Constantly attentive without being intrusive & such amazing knowledge of the local area.

You definitely want to make reservations for dinner, as the food is exquisite! On 3 occasions we sampled an excellent five course 'degustation' dinner with a different but equally supurb selection every evening. Tom (the Chef) menu was well balanced, delicious, innovative, & on a par with Michelin establishments. Breakfasts were a fresh assortment of fruit, natural yoghurt, breads, cheeses, homemade jams, sausages and ham. The morning we managed to breakfast on the terrace, with its sweeping unspoiled French countryside view, was totally breath-taking.

All in all a beautiful part of the countryside in a well-kept, much loved, elegant & graceful home that just happens to also hold an extraordinary history shared by wonderful hosts. This was a superb visit to celebrate a special friend's 50th birthday. A very special visit to a very special place.

Once again, a fantastic stay with Peter, Katie and Tina the dog. Everything here is so relaxed. ALL the staff are helpful and friendly and the place itself is wonderful. Top marks, or as my dogs would say TOP BARKS! Tom's food is the best we have eaten in France and we would recommend this place to everyone! Our fourth visit says it all!

It's a castle! Wonderful winding stone staircase, beautiful views, serene setting.
I felt like a princess. Owners Katie and Peter are most gracious hosts and the
meals were spectacular. Don't miss dinner! We thought it was a bargain considering
the special accommodations and wonderful food. A great base for visiting Carcassonne and
the Cathar castles or just taking a walk in the countryside.

The Chateau de Camon is a luxurious chambre d'hôte situated in the tiny village of Camon not far from the touristy and rather unpleasant bastide town of Mirepoix. The little hotel is charming and very comfortable with good rooms and a nice garden with a large pool. The building is a genuine medieval abbey with a classic courtyard and impressive spiral staircases - and everything has been faithfully restored by the current owners and equipped with tasteful furniture and elegant decorations.

The hotel also has an exquisite restaurant with an excellent five course 'degustation' dinner where the menu changes every evening. A stay at the Chateau de Camon is on the expensive side, but worth it - if you don't mind the air of hollow snobbishness that sometimes floats through the corridors and hangs over the tables on the outside terrace where drinks are being served before supper.

The village of Camon has a few narrow streets and a tourist office, also a grocery store and a nice little café serving sandwiches and drinks from a delivery van parked near the river on the outskirts of town. A bar on the main square near the abbey appears to be closed most of the time. The location is excellent e.g. for exploring the fabulous Cathar castles and for day trips to the eastern Pyrenees.

L'Abbaye Chateau de Camon is truly magical. The over-riding instinct on leaving Camon is not to tell a soul about this very special place. However the seemingly high number of return guests suggest that others have discovered the joys of Camon long before us. Don't think you are going to stay in a hotel, it is far far better that; to experience the atmosphere that the owners have created in their beautiful home is a privilege.

Room Tip: Get a first floor bedroom if one is available.
