Hotel Palais Cardinal

We reserved online at the hotel website 5 months in advance, confirming a "double confort" room with "demi pension" (breakfast and either lunch or dinner) at 178 E, with parking and breakfast extra. When we arrived on Tuesday, we were told that the restaurant was closed that day. We upgraded our room from a small street view to one of the larger rooms on the first floor with access from the garden (168 E for room only). We were allowed to check in early since the room was ready, and this was a plus, allowing us to picnic in the lovely garden area next to the pool, surrounded by the remnants of the medieval town wall. Our room was clean and comfortable with a queen size bed and a large bathroom and soaking tub. As others have mentioned, there are not many places to stay in St. Emilion and so the Palais Cardinal is a good choice. Breakfast at 14 E seemed high so we did not eat there. The staff was helpful and the maids were particularly cheerful. Since our room had no windows (other than the entry door), we were offered a fan to help circulate the air. We were only sorry that we could not dine in their restaurant, as we had read good reviews of the food.

Room Tip: Rooms in the garden area are larger and quieter.

My wife and I stayed in the lovely Hotel after coming from Bordeaux. First let me put the comments about Maria to bed. Maria was kind, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. There are always grumpy people in the world, Maria is certainly not one of them.

The Hotel has excellent location right at the top of the town off a roundabout near the orginal city wall. They offer off street garaged parking at a reasonable rate.
The Hotel has a nice dining room and meals which we enjoyed and they have a small pool which is quite unusual for smaller Hotels in villages like St-Emilion.

Bottom line is the Hotel Palais Cardinal is a solidly good Hotel with an excellent location, pleasant service staff, and a a good restaurant. In a small town like St-Emilion there is not much more you could ask for. We recommend this Hotel
to you.

P.S. We stayed in the suite just off the pool which had air-conditioning and much
more space than the standard double rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for the suite which is off of the pool - much more spacious than the std. double rooms.

And the staff is helpful. Rooms are quite small, but considering the age of the town I suppose that is to be expected. Lovely garden with a charming pool. Not many lodging options in St Emilion but this one is worth considering

Stayed at the Palais Cardinal in early September. Maybe we were lucky but a great time of year to visit Saint Emilion. We had great weather and missing August seemed to reduce the crowds. Although the biggest numbers visiting the town seem to arrive by bus for day tours. The hotel is perfectly located, easily found and was welcoming when we arrived. Room made up as a twin but became a very comfortable double when we asked at reception for the bed to be made up that way. Garden and pool area are really pleasant and a lovely addition in a town centre location. The rooms were very nice and bathrooms well presented and spotless. Minor quibble that the shower head can't be placed on the wall for a proper shower. All in all a very pleasant stay.

We had a great stay. The room was small but sufficient for our needs. The bathroom was very clean. We thought this was excellent value in a pleasant hotel. The garden was nice as was the pool. I loved their garage which was especially useful for protecting my car laden down with wine and for keeping it out of the heat. For the money this is as good as it gets!

Room Tip: We had the smallest room which was a corner room which we liked because it had two windows which all...

We have spent two days in this hôtel in september. The spanish's girl who was at the reception,Maria, was very helpful and kind with us , she showed us two differents rooms and she made the necessary to give us a room with the view over the garden. She proposed us the parking and the dinner which was fabuleuse. The hôtel is in the city center and very good situed.

Tiny rooms and poor service, especially from Manager/receptionist Maria who apparently is in the wrong business. She is disrespectful and argues openly with customers. Location is the only thing that saves this hotel from closing.
