4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2014

We have stayed at this very good and convenient hotel for many years but thought it was worthy of a mention on Trip advisor. They are very helpful and polite. The food was very good and we were very impressed this time.

Room Tip: any room facing the beautiful gardens

We have just enjoyed a three night stay at the Chateau and can only say what a wonderful experience it was. We booked a bed and breakfast package and decided to eat in the hotel restaurant on the first night as we didn't want to go too far as we had had a four hour drive to get there. The service was attentive, helpful and cheerful.

Although the set menu only had a small number of choices for entrees and for the main course, all were tempting. The food was beautifully presented and bursting with flavours superbly complementing each other. Consequently we decided, having looked at the restaurants in St Emilion and Pomerol, to eat again at the hotel on the second night. We were though, a little concerned that we would run out of choices from the set menu, but after discussion with Marie Laure, the waitress in charge, she reassured us that the chef would offer a selection from the a la carte within the set menu price. On the third night the chef even proposed a special menu, which after discussion we were only too happy to accept.

And how glad we were! The food just seemed to get better and better. At all times Vincent, the Maitre D was on hand to keep a close eye on proceedings to make sure that the restaurant ran smoothly. He and his staff are a credit to the hotel and after only three weeks at his post things are moving forward at a great pace. Congratulations and thank you for a wonderful time.

Our room (No 226) in the Maison Bien Etre was very comfortable and immaculately maintained, with lovely views over the park and the front of the chateau. It was a shame that there were no tea and coffee making facilities but, in the reception area, complimentary tea and coffee were available during the afternoon.

One down side to the hotel is the size of the spa and another is the lateness of its opening in the morning as we would have liked to go in before breakfast and therefore avoid the crowds. Even though we stayed out of season in February, it became very busy on Saturday afternoon and the jacuzzi quickly became full very and didn't enable everybody to partake who wanted to.

A covered pool would have been nice too!

Based on our experience we would definitely return in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: Would recommend our room but cannot comment on the others as we didn't see them. In Febraury not...

We stayed 3 nights at Grand Barrail and were blown away by the sheer beauty and peacefulness of the hotel grounds and the surrounding vineyards. The room was very comfortable and came with a small balcony overlooking the vineyards. The restaurant served great food and the service was very good. The SPA was nice too, though I would have preferred to have the pool indoors rather than outside. The hotel had cycles available, which we used to explore the surrounding vineyards. There was also a complimentary tour of the neighbouring vinery, which was very enjoyable. Grand Barrail is about a 10-15 minute drive from the Libourne train station and about 5 minutes drive from Saint Emilion city centre. This coupled with the Chateau's history and enchanting location make it an ideal place to relax in and explore the area from.

We took up on an offer on Groupon to visit the chateau and the area. We were certainly not disappointed.
Our room was large & very pleasant with views over the vineyards( shame about the rain & mist).
As part of the deal we visited the local winery where we spent a most informative hour with the most charming & helpful staff.
The meal in the evening was unfortunately not part of the deal but was very good and the recommendation on the wine excellent.
Our only negative point was the lack of any proper lounge area to enjoy the ambience of the hotel.

I booked this hotel as a special treat for my husband's birhday with the intention that as it could well be bad weather in November we would at least have the option to use the spa facilities and enjoy a bit of pampering. How wrong I was! Although I had clearly booked a family room and expressly emailed the hotel to ask about the facilities that they could provide for our 5 year old daughter, the hotel and Expedia failed to advise that they did not allow people under 16 to enter the spa. According the reception staff this is a 'law' in France but I have not found any reference to this on the internet and having stayed in several other hotels in France where we have had no problems at all using the spa facilities I can only assume that the reception staff were lying.

We advised immediately that as we were unable to use the facilities as a family that we wanted to leave as early as possible. We were then fobbed off for several hours with excuses about not being able to contact Expedia. Finally they rudely advised we could leave a day early without additional charge - I should hope not!

We asked if we could have a kettle for our room to make a cup of tea. We were informed that we were not allowed to have this and had to go to the bar to get 'boiling' water in a little jug - sorry but my hot tap produces warmer water! The room itself was OK but it was certainly not a family room - just an ordinary room with a camp bed set up for our daughter.

The menu in the restaurant was completely child unfriendly so we cancelled our dinner reservations and sought a meal elsewhere. Again, this was highly 'frowned upon' by the reception staff who then made us feel like second-class citizens looking down their noses at us as though we weren't good enough to be in their hotel because we dared to complain. At our departure, we were almost expecting to have a problem and we weren't disappointed. The receptionist tried to overcharge us by nearly 70 euros - nice try lady! We pointed out her error with good grace and were rewarded with almost an apology but not quite. By this stage it was comical.

There were two plus points about the hotel -

1) The building itself was beautiful and in better weather the location would have been idyllic overlooking the vineyards etc although could be a bit isolated for some as was quite a walk away from Saint Emilion itself so you need a car or plenty of budget for taxis into nearby Libourne etc.
2) Great shower - very hot and powerful with nice fluffy towels. As this was as close as we got to the spa experience we made good use of this!

Overall message - if you have kids DO NOT stay here!

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere :)

I stayed a few nights here in July this year.
I found my stay fantastic. The rooms were amazing and had wonderful views of the surrounding vineyard. The food in the restaurant is expensive but is brilliant and well worth the price.

Saint emillion is a amazing place and this hotel is well located to the town centre.
I would love to stay again and will recommend this to anyone visiting the area.

We enjoyed 2 nights at the Grand Barrail. It was convenient to St Emilion. The staff were friendly and competent. We were in room 121 which was well appointed and clean. The temperature was fine in our room but the other rooms on the second level above reception which were occupied by the group were very hot.
We had dinner which included a tuna steak which was a little dry. Service was slow since only 2 staff were serving a fairly full dining room. Breakfast was sumptuous with very fresh newly picked hazelnuts. The coffee served at the table was not hot but there is a Nespresso machine we used instead. We used the bicycles which are parked at the front of the hotel. We had coffee in the afternoon and a latte cost 6 Euros. In summary, like much of Europe the good hotels are overpriced. You just have to accept that this is the reality of today.
