“Ideal restaurant stop”
Reviewed May 7, 2012 via mobile

A rainy day in St Emilion with an 8 month old baby was not an ideal situation to be in, but on the road out we made a random stop at this hotel. The service was perfect, the lunch menu was faultless, the dining room was original art deco splendour and big enough and colourful enough to ensure that the baby did not disturb and was entertained by the surroundings and staff. A couple of glasses of the excellent local wine and 3 courses came to less than expected. Worth a visit or stay and even a detour if you want a good meal.

We checked into the Chateau after a fairly long drive and it was like entering heaven.

The house is spectacular, the surroundings peaceful and serene. We stayed in room 22, which is on what we think of as the third floor. The elevator takes you there, so no worries with luggage. The room was lovely, with a nice-sized bathroom and a lovely view of the vineyards.

The breakfast buffet was huge, with the option of having a variety of omelets or other eggs. It was a wonderful way to start the day.

We had dinner there one night and it was lovely. The setting is in a classic large room with wood paneling and stained glass windows. We had a fixed price multiple course dinner, which was lovely and very nicely paced.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

We loved staying here!!

Room Tip: We loved room #22

We spent 3 nights at the Grand Barrail for our honeymoon in March.
It was quite a memorable stay.
We had booked the wine & wellness package which includes access to the hotel spa + spa treatment for both of us + wine tasting tour + st. emilion city tour. Absolutely worth it.

The property consists of rooms/suites inside the chateau building and others in the extension building. Of course staying inside the Chateau is more luxurious, but the extension rooms are nice too, they have a view to the vineyard, so in season they should be nice (we came in march before the season so all vines were still dry)

However, we used the tip from one of tripadvisor revieweres and we had contacted the hotel director in advance to arrival who gave us an upgrade to stay inside the Chateau in one of the suites...It was marvelous...The loveliest room both of us had ever seen. It was a round room with luxury furniture with a view to the lake and the Chateau garden. This upgrade in itself is for us the highest degree of service.

Breakfast was very rich too. Too bad we did not dine in the hotel restaurant as we had opted to check out the town restaurants at night. Next time we will try it!

In summary, would highly recommend this hotel for any couple looking for a romantic relaxing getaway if you would like to treat urself to (wining + dining + spa relaxing + scenery + luxury hotel + quietness)

Room Tip: Rent a car or bicycles to be able to commute to the St. Emilion Town. The Hotel is about 4km away f...

Have stayed here several times now and love it. The staff are very friendly and provide excellent service. The restaurant is beautiful and the food amazing. Try the "Degustation" menu, that was a real treat and their Grand Marnier Souffle was the best souffle we'd ever tasted!

Room Tip: In our experience all the rooms so far have been good but if you have a dog you cannot stay in the s...

As in for lots of french, the Spa staff is rude, obnoxious, and not very professional.
If you order a nice glass of wine by the pool, it will be served in a plastic glass, it sums up the attitude. I agree with other comments, the rooms have a very poorly decor.

What a pity !

This was my first experience staying overnight at a chateau. Of course we didn't actually sleep in the Chateau itself, but in one of the modern annexes. Overall, it was a bit of a disappointment. The decor was incongruous (I stayed at an IBIS with more charm) with a giant floor to ceiling, green plaid headboard that looked like it could be used as a tennis backboard and tables that were awkwardly placed which made maneuvering in the dark foreboding. There was no mini bar nor provisions for tea or coffee in the morning. The bathroom was nice and functional, yet lacked hotwater (apparently, we were at the far end of the heating source). I made use of the bidet and am not sue if it was the cause of the cystitis that cropped up a few hours later as I boarded my 9 1/2 hour flight to the US.

Dinner did not overwhelm either as I ordered what must have been the smallest 43 euro lobster ever caught, with five small nuggets of meat. I was still so hungry I looked under the small shells at either end of the lobster to see if there weren't something I hadn't uncovered.

I won't elaborate on the check-out. Suffice to say when we asked for help with our two modest pieces of luggage, the bellman wasn't even bothered to bring them outside to the car, but deposited them in the far corner of the lobby. When I arrived on the spot, the girl at the desk, who stood less than 15 paces away from me, couldn't be bothered to help me as I contemplated my luggage and the lobby door, and that was after I mentioned the lack of hot water.

There were, however, some redeeming points. The view from our ground-floor patio of the adjacent vineyards was glorious, particularly, at dawn. It had to be one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever taken-in. The restaurant to its credit gave us all sorts of extra tastings and our desert and wine from the vineyard nextdoor was outstanding.

One last point. Give yourself plenty of time if you are travelling to the airport during rush hour traffic as it took us over 1 1/2 hours to get there on the route recommended by the hotel.

Room Tip: Book a room in the Grand Chateau.
