On a recent visit to St Emilion we wandered the busy narrow streets with hundreds of other tourists. Needing refreshment we centred around a small square rammed full of plastic chairs, umbrellas, kids, buggies, pizza, burgers and carafes of warm white wine and chilled red (I'm exaggerating but you get my gist). In the corner of this square next to a popular photo spot I noticed canopies with an even better view. Investigating further we entered a delightful oasis of calm and quality.

Within 10 minutes a table was mustered with one of the best views I've had (over lunch I mean). The choice of was a little limited but we had confidence that whatever we chose it would be good. Indeed everything looked fantastic and we decided on oysters and a caesar salad, accompanied by a couple of glasses of rosé. Everything was indeed delicious and we savoured every forkful.

Whilst we we happily working our way through our meal, a selection of deserts on a large tray was being flaunted to various tables in a kind of beauty parade. Once chosen a freshly prepared version was timely delivered. Saying no to a desert here would surely be a travesty. We of course gave in to the temptation and only just resisted ordering them all.

The bill once requested came as a surprise and I had to check it again to make sure they had not missed something off! Why would anyone sit out in that busy market square on plastic chairs fighting for a table on struggling to catch the waiters eye when they do????

Any return visit to St Emilion would not be complete without an 'encore' of Hostellerie de Plaisance.

The Hostellerie is a very classy, well heeled hotel, a fine, handsome stone construction which stands proudly atop the charming town of St Emilion. As a member of Relais and Chateau and with standard double B and B rates nearing 500 euros a night in high season (425 for the room and 35 per person for breakfast) and rising rapidly skywards from there we were anticipating something quite special. First impressions didn't disappoint as in addition to the elegant façade the communal parts are exquisitely decorated and there are fabulous views over the town. The outdoor drinks terrace which is kept exclusively for guests is a delight as is the restaurant area. Our standard room was unthrilling, perfectly adequate but with no views and just ordinary in size, decoration and fit out. Reception staff were good but where this hotel badly fell down during our visit was the service received from bar staff. We went to the bar shortly after check in and anticipated the prompt and polished delivery of a chilled tipple from one of the smartly clad waiters. We waited. And waited. One staff member walked past us twice without acknowledgment. Two others continued to set for dinner in full view of us. Eventually we had to get up and approach one of them for a drinks list which after a further 10 minutes still didn't arrive. So we went to Reception and requested that someone might come and serve us. Eventually one arrived who informed us they didn't have a drinks list, it was all 'in his head'. We ordered and clarified that a glass of wine was 7 euros. Shockingly getting a second drink involved the same rigmarole of having to seek service out. I ordered the same wine from a different waiter. In his head it was 12 euros a glass. Hilarious! We didn't have a third drink as no-one asked. We didn't eat at the hotel as I had pre-booked recommended restaurants in St Emilion. Service for post dinner drinks was much better and the hotel terrace is the most divine place in town for this, we had a wonderful evening. All in all, this is a fine hotel but the service levels are way below those that clients should expect from such an establishment. Staff should be polished and fine tuned at this level but they most certainly were not in our experience. As such I wouldn't recommend the hotel to a friend and consider it to be well over priced. However I have given 4 stars as this hotel is in no way just average and it would be unfair not to acknowledge the beauty and quality of the hotel, and its fine location. It just needs a staff training session or two.

We stayed here on the basis of its restaurant - despite the 600 euro a night pricetag. We were situated in the heart of the village of St Emilion, which is tourist-filled but beautiful. It was a sanctuary from the tourists however. Our room was on the other side of the hotel, through the small garden and several lifts. It was gorgeous, as it should have been for the price! Dinner was incredible, and worth every penny. The service was also good. One detractor was the breakfast. I think we paid 70 euro for 2, but it was certainly not worth it. Intricate and elaborate, but not my cup of tea for breakfast, and poor value. Was a wonderful stay regardless.

What a charming place. This hotel occupies multiple levels along the hill that is the edge of the main area of St. Emilion. Getting to our room required riding 3 different elevators from the lobby, but we enjoyed the "journey" each time we came and went from our room. In the building our room was in, we could also take a back door that opened right on the lower street level of the town.

Service was excellent, and the innkeepers always tried to remember our names/room each time we walked into the lobby.

The entire facility was nicely appointed, with the rooms being comfortable and modern.

I would highly recommend this place.

We drove to Saint Emilion through one of the worst weather I have ever know in France but when we arrived, it was so worth it. What a lovely hotel!! Our room (which was expensive, admittedly) was one of the best I have ever stayed in. Beautifully decorated bedroom, glamorous bathroom and our own private terrace with a good view over part of the town - it was just sad that due to the weather we could not use it...and I was even sadder that we could only stay one night here on our busy schedule...especially after a paticularly disappointing stay in a Chateau the night before, this hotel seemed even more stunning by comparison! The hotel's location is perfect too for exploring St Emilion itself. There is also the facility of secluded parking (some metres away from the hotel, at no extra charge). We found the staff friendly and helpful and we are looking forward to a return visit soon.

This hotel, built into the hilltop that is St. Emilion is stunning. We had a magnificent room, the public spaces were gorgeous and the town was so charming. There are lots of great food and wine shops, some antiquities, and of course fabulous vineyards to see and wine taste. This hotel had a first rate dining room and chef. The service was excellent, the food fantastic and the local wines were just amazing. Loved it!

Staying at this lovely hotel was a special treat for our last night in France. It was expensive but definitely worth it as we have a wonderful memory of our stay. Our room did not have a great view but it was elegant and romantic - just what I wanted. I chose it from the website and from that first contact I knew we were going to enjoy our stay. Service was excellent throughout with a special thank you to the car valet who stayed in the car with us to put us on exactly the right road out of town. Dinner was exceptional - food, service and, atmosphere were all perfect. We ate a la carte as I wanted to try the Brittany lobster (sweet and tender) and each dish was a delight to look at and to savour.
