“Relaxing stay in charming gite with welcoming owners”
Reviewed April 3, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We stayed for one week over Easter and were welcomed by a tasty meal waiting for us when we arrived. We found the gite well-positioned and close to the beautiful village of St Emilion. We liked the large sitting room and kitchen area which is ideal for a family and there are all the amenities to make it a home from home. There is also plenty of secluded space right outside for eating and relaxing in the sun, including a good-sized pool.

“Well Located and Brilliant Quality Accommodation”
Reviewed November 6, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

We had a fantastic stay here. The place is brilliantly located to explore the Dordogne and Gironde areas by car. Our host was wonderful and we found some lovely food ready on our arrival which is exactly what you need after a long drive south from the UK.

The cottage was also very thoughtfully furnished and absolutely perfect for us and our two young boys.

We had a great time here and would highly recommend.

“Great Location, Great Hosts”
Reviewed October 2, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

We spent one week with Andy and Richard and there was nothing that Andy would not do for us. It started with a greeting and transfer from Bordeaux airport then a smooth run through of the beautiful Lavender Cottage and a huge folder containing everything you need to know about the area. Thanks for a wonderful stay and the early morning drop off to Libourne. The afternoon cakes and welcome pack were fully enjoyed.

Regards
Luke and Annmarie

“A great holiday in a lovely location”

We had a weeks stay in Vines Cottage in May.

It is a really nice cottage. It is more modern than your average French gite. It is clean and comes with all mod cons - washing machine, dishwasher, iron & board, airer, microwave, good wifi, English freeview tv channels, DVD player, English 3 pin socket extension leads with a French plug on the end, all linen included, hairdryer, travel cot, high chair... The list goes on.

You are provided with a welcome pack of essentials like bread, butter, milk, juice, beer which is fab to start you off. You are also given washing up liquid, hand soap, dishwasher tabs, laundry tabs, kitchen roll, cling film etc. Fabulous!! All the things you need when self catering but don't want to cart on a plane or have to buy masses off when you are only staying for a week.

The beds are comfy and the shutters keep out the morning sun for a lie in. The bathroom is huge. The bathroom has been designed as a wet room, which is not my personal preference, and it becomes extremely slippery after a shower.

It has a lovely private garden, a great space for little ones to run around in. There is a gate on the garden which you can bolt so you know little ones cannot access the pool. The pool is nice, useable in May but the water was a little chilly.

You are only about 10 mins from St Emillion, 20 mins from Libourne and an hour from Bordeaux or Bergerac. We also made the trip to Arcachon, it's 1.5 hours but worth it. The man made lake at Villefrance de Lonchat is only about 20mins and an ideal spot for little ones. There is a Boulangerie for your morning bread and pastries about a 5 min drive away.

The owners meet you there on arrival (they live in the Chateau next door) and are friendly. It is a bit strange as there is a locked internal door in the cottage which I guess goes through to the Chateau. We heard some chatting from there on occasions but didn't see anyone. Again this is probably personal preference but we would have preferred to have been a bit more separate. There is also a locked internal door to the next cottage, ideal if you are a larger family or group and wanted to rent both. There is also Sydney the cat, a bit elderly but very friendly and pleased to meet the visitors!

You are expected to do a basic clean when you check out, but this is only to be expected. You are provided with everything you need for this in the cottage. You can pay €30 to forego this but it doesn't take long and in my opinion the least you should do as it is clean and tidy when you arrive. It was a little bit annoying that we were checked up on about 45mins before check out on the pretence of seeing if we needed a wake up call but then I guess there are some guests who take liberties.

We would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a quiet get away near Bordeaux. The pricing off peak season is excellent. If we were to go back we would look into flights to and from Bergerac instead of Bordeaux next time as the Billi Terminal at Bordeaux (where all the low cost airlines operate from) is awful. More of a cattle market in a big metal shed than an airport terminal!!

We received our deposit back within 4 days of checking out - very quick.

“Home from home dream cottage”
Reviewed August 11, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Beautiful 2 bedroom cottage in the heart of the wine growing area. Extremely well kitted out kitchen (on other occasions I have ended up nipping out for a potato peeler and a decent knife). Not so here - everything you could wish for in self-catering accommodation. Andrew was a welcoming and friendly host and I can't recommend enough the wine tasting tour he offered. Andrew was a knowledgeable guide and we learnt so much about wine production and the local area. Richard produced the most fabulous treats for us (his carrot cake is to die for) which was most unexpected and thoroughly appreciated. All the ingredients for a perfect holiday. Can't wait to go back.

“Fabulous place, fabulous welcome, fabulous everything!”
Reviewed May 31, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Vines & Roses is a little haven (or perhaps heaven!) in the heart of the St Emilion vineyards. We stayed in Vine Cottage, which is cosy, comfortable and probably the best equipped holiday rental I have found. Both bedrooms were very comfortable - good wardrobe space as well as comfy beds - and a large bathroom with both bath and shower. Open plan sitting room and kitchen also has a dining table and chairs, but we mostly ate in the garden. Very well equipped kitchen, including often absent items like oven gloves, an apron, plenty of crockery, cooking pans, decent glasses, and essentially (for St Emilion) a decanter. We were there with our baby grandson, and cot, cot linen, high chair and changing mat were all provided. The garden is private and enclosed (important with small children), and there is a separate (shared) swimming pool with loungers etc.
The location is rural and tranquil, but you're only 15 mins from medieval St Emilion, and slightly less attractive Libourne (but it's Sunday market is a must visit). Bordeaux itself is only 45 mins away, and historic Bergerac less than an hour.
But despite all of this, the real difference is the warm welcome from the owners, and their balance of being friendly and accessible for advice, and yet not intruding on your holiday. We especially loved the meal provided on our arrival, and the additional home baked cakes provided during our stay. We were made to feel very much at home and as a result would strongly recommend this place to anyone looking for a lovely relaxed but high quality holiday rental in Bordeaux wine country.
We will certainly be returning - probably with the rest of our family, booking all 3 cottages.

“Idyllic retreat among the vineyards”
Reviewed May 16, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

This was a wonderful place! Andy & Richard were superb hosts. We had as much privacy as we wanted, either on our own terrace or around the shared pool. It was an easy drive to St Emilion and tother surrounding towns. It was so relaxing to cone home after a day's exploring, and enjoy wine & cheese on the terrace overlooking the vineyards. Richard's yummy desserts only increased the feeling of luxury. The beds were very comfortable, and the kitchen & bath were spacious & clean. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
