My boyfriend and I stayed for a 4 day 3 night trek, and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience. It fulfilled all of my desires for a jungle expedition (great food, informative guide, and multiple animal sightings). But Inotawa provided more than those three basic expectations. What separates this place from other lodges (based off of other's reviews) is the more intimate atmosphere. Not coming during tourist season was a definite boon. The majority of our outings were 1 on 1 with the guide, allowing us to see more animals due to the lack of group noise. The lodge itself was charming and relaxing, without all the bells and whistles that other lodges might offer in an effort to entertain many guests at once. Instead of TVs or a game room, Inotawa offered hammocks, an open porch, and a tranquil atmosphere, which was exactly what we wanted after the 16 hour bus ride to get to Puerto Maldonado. Lastly, Inotawa was cheaper than the other lodges. Though I'm not sure why, I couldn't be more appreciative. Low prices kept the trip accessible and allowed us to better tip our guide. The low prices in addition to the personal and serene atmosphere left us wanting for nothing. Inotawa should definitely be taken into consideration if you're seeking a jungle experience.

This place deserves some really stellar recognition c.f. the other lodging options around Puerto Maldanado.

In the words of the manager herself: "I do not like to say that we are better than the other companies... but we are certainly different".

From talking to other people, reading a lot of reviewas, and experienceing it myself, the other Tambopata companies are notably expenisve and lacking in charm when compared to Inotawa.

You are able to get an almost identical itinerary/package to the most expensive lodgings for near half of the price at Inotawa, still having quality lodgings deep inside the rainforest. One of our guides had worked at the most expenive Inkaterra lodge, and told us that the only conceivable differences to him in the experience were slighlty more choice at meal times, and a little more padding that might be favoured by luxury travellers.

Our lodgings could hardly have been any better; a spacious two person bungalow, with an ensuite bathroom.

The 4d3n tour was fantastic; unbeliveably good for how much we paid.

A final thing that makes Inotawa very special is that it is a small lodge, (competing with a collection of very large ones). Size of group really matters in the rainforest. We were in a group of 4, with one guide. We never encountered another company's group smaller than 10. The small number of people meant that we could creep through the rainforest very quietly, and saw a lot of animals that people we spoke to later never even got close to.

The food was incredible. Meals were never repeated.

The only possible critiscm that I can think of is that we weren't warned quite how far the walk to the mammal clay lick was, and so got quite short of water.

If you want the best value rainforest lodge experience in Puerto Maldonado, this is a really obvious choice.

We stayed here for 5 nights, and there is no need to stay anywhere else. They met us on time at the airport, and they drove us and two other parties into town for buying last minute type items. Then, onto the river by tourist bus for about 20 to 30 minutes. Once at the river, they loaded our bags and took us all upriver to the lodge - about another 30 minutes. They served us a delicious lunch on the boat which was like a chaufa (seasoned rice with a little chicken) wrapped in a banana leaf. I am not including too many details about Inotawa's activities here or all of the animals we saw, because I don't want to "spoil" the unknowns and surprises. We did see, however, 73 species of birds.

Since most lodges in this area are "eco lodges", don't expect a 5-star hotel experience in any of them. Do your research and come with an adventurous attitude. I researched most (if not all) of the lodges before our trip, and Inotawa simply "felt" right from the beginning. Our guide was excellent, bilingual (English), and awesome! Ask for Hugo, especially if you are more of a bird person. They had guides bilingual in at least English and German that I know of. The food was excellent, the service was terrific, and atmosphere was very relaxed. The day trips and hikes were not too strenuous for city slicker types and interesting enough for those looking for a little more than a walk in the park. Overnight excursions which require camping were also available - we didn't, but being more familiar with the experience now , we would definitely consider it next time. You can organize the activities according to your tastes and the length of your stay. Our last day did not have any pre-planned activities so we had the option for a free day to relax or to add another adventure. We chose a day-long boat ride up the river to the Rio Gato, and it was a great choice after all of the walking the days before. Make sure you plan this type of activity two or three days in advance so Inotawa can prepare.

Most of all, Inotawa was much less expensive than most of the other alternatives, and we just cannot think of what could be worth the significant extra cost elsewhere! Inotawa's office is just around the corner from airport and they will keep your luggage there until it is time to go to the airport - in case you have time to check out the town (which isn't all that much) and the snake and butterfly houses literally around the corner. Everyone at Inotawa was very accommodating!

Keep in mind, there is electricity only between 6:30pm and 10:00pm for charging batteries, etc. Bring flashlights, extra batteries (rechargeable if possible), sun screen, and plenty of insect repellent. The weather can be hot and very humid, but do not forget lightweight long pants and sleeves for times of less bug repellent and a windbreaker for the early mornings. Tennis shoes or sandals are great for around the lodge and optional hiking boots for the longer hikes in the forest.

Tips:
1) Do not expect to see every type of animal that lives here. You will be very lucky to see the cats.

2) Take the last flight out of Puerto Maldonado (LAN) at 2:00pm so you can tour the snake house (serpentario) and the butterfly house run by Inkaterra. We liked the snake house better and it was cheaper. Make sure to hold the 10-foot boa named Cesar and the sloth!

3) There's also a cheap "menu" restaurant just outside of the airport gate for lunch or breakfast.

This is a great jungle lodge! The program is very diverse and interesting (parrots, river, nightwalk (scorpions, tarantulas, etc.), local farm, lake (piranha, caimans, birds)), the guides speak good English. The lodge was extremely clean and the setting in the jungle (no electricity, only candles) was amazing! Still, the lodge was comfortable with tight moscito nets, shower, water toilet, hammocks, free water/coffee/tee/snacks/fruits at all times, and cash bar. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive! The breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets were absolutely delicious!
