“keep a close eye on the owner”
Reviewed May 6, 2010

Stayed here with my husband and 2 sisters for 1 night. We were previously at Hostal Mama Hilda´s at Chugchilan and decided to stay here for the night so that we could see the crater and not have to back track along the loop.
It was colder in Quilotoa due to the altitude and the rooms had no form of heating so we were FREEZING. There was also supposed to be hot water but you apparently have to run the taps for 4 minutes before it comes and we felt that it would be a real waste of water to do that especially in this part of the country....so we gave showers a miss.ç
Most disconcerting thing happened at the end when we paid the owner. He spent a minute looking confused and whilst he thought we weren´t looking, hid a $20 note in the napkins and was going to tell us that we gave him too little money but luckily one of the members of our group was looking the whole time and he just smiled when he realised.
He also organised a transfer for us to Quito and I would say that we were lucky to survive the trip. The driver (who I think was a family member who had a car) drove like a maniac, extremely fast in the rain around all the bends and our multiple attempts to tell him to slow down failed. We also spent 40minutes getting to where we needed to in Quito because he didn´t know where to go and refused our help with the map we had.

Anyhow, it is convenient to get to the crater from here but in hindsight would have stayed at Mama Hilda´s another night even with having to backtrack an hour. Meals and accommodation here is also more expensive than Mama Hilda´s.

We stayed here during our travel through Ecuador for one night. Only thing in the area is the crater lake and this is probably the best hotel in town.
Large general area which is heated (it is over 4000 meters high there, so gets pretty cold in the evenings), good food, nice rooms (rooms with electric heating)

The hostel is furnished in a cosy and rustic manner. Although being the only guests during our one night stay the owner lighted the fire in the fireplace and we were served tasty ecuadorian style food. Very nice stay!

Truly stunning location, 600 yards from a non active caldera in the high Andes. Luxury hotel with a very rural and rustic charm.
Definitely one of my favourites.

We stayed at the Quilotoa Crater Lake Lodge which was fantastic. Amazing service, spectacular location and very friendly staff, including Carlos the owner.

The lodge has a special atmosphere and you feel at home right away. Room are comfortable and the whole lodge has a rustic feel with a huge log fire, candles and wooden furniture. Beautiful.

See details of how to reach the lodge from Quito from their site -- - there are bus services which take only three hours.

  • Liked — Amazing location and fantastic staff
  • Disliked — I suffered from altitutude sickness
  • Tips/Secrets — PLEAS E acclimatise first, then you can enjoy all the amazing hikes.
