“Camped here - kind of awkward...”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

We camped at Tambopaxi, we did not stay in the lodge there. my rating is for the camping, not the rooms necessarily.

It was a bit awkward because we wanted to camp, and were informed about the availability of bathrooms, hot showers, and so on. it was nice to camp and have bathrooms to use, but it seemed like the staff either felt awkward toward campers or treated us differently. either way we felt as if we were stepping on their toes a bit, but we didnt want to... for example, one of us asked for a towel (offering to pay) so he could shower but he was told in broken english that showers were "not allowed" for campers... but then a different staff member lent him a towel for free. so who knows...

otherwise, camping was cool. nice views of Cotopaxi, though there was much cloud cover while we were there. it was very windy and cold, a bit of rain as well. picnic tables available around the camping area.

keep in mind, the north entrance into the park, from Machachi, technically closes at 4 or something like that, but there was a guard when we arrived at about 6. we had a little bit of trouble getting in because we were not on a reservation list for Tambopaxi... it seems most people go through the main entrance farther south from the west. however, Tambopaxi is very close to the north entrance, so if for some reason you really weren't allowed in by car you might just be able to walk a few minutes.

as far as the lodge - it seemed very nice, but also pricey. a generator powers the whole place, and it seems quite luxurious. if you are willing to pay for it it's probably worth it. the restaurant was nice too. i only had hot chocolate so i could sit inside away from the wind and cold. but others were having really nice meals with great views of the awesome volcano. also, wifi available. so ironic - in the elements but still on facebook... seemed wrong haha

camping cost $7 per person per night. breakfast was not included, clearly.

There is no separate category for Tambopaxi restaurant, so I put the review in this category.

We went there with a guide; there was a choice of trout or chicken for lunch. The appetizer was broccoli cheese soup, which was average. I selected the chicken. The chicken was very plain, with no spices or sauce. There was a very small salad- carrots, beans. There was also two small potato circles. We had an odd cold strawberry- like mousse for dessert, which I did not like.

I wouldn't recommend the restaurant, but there isn't another choice in the particular location.

Our trek group of 16 stayed here for two nights prior to ascending Mt Cotopaxi. Dormitory style rooms were a bit cramped with 7 men and all our rucksacks. Food and service was good. Nice peaceful setting as long as you didn't get fixated on the menacing look of Cotopaxi.

We stayed here in April this year for two nights after a recommendation from friends who regularly visit cotopaxi. We thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact it was the best place we stayed in Ecuador!
We stayed in a private room, which was very comfortably furnished with a huge bed and down blankets, and it had large windows with the most amazing views of cotopaxi. It was also very clean. There was a fireplace for heating, which kept the room warm all night long. In the building was a very comfortable common lounge area with spectacular views, great place to relax and just enjoy looking at the scenery. We were lucky and were the only ones staying there during the week so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was a large group staying in the main lodge though.
Tambopaxi arranged pick up for us from Quito airport, and were happy to arrange a drop off back to quito airport even though we needed our transport at the awful hour of 4am to catch an early morning flight leaving quito. The staff even offered to get up at 3:30am to make breakfast for us! (of course we said no, but even then they kindly prepared something for us the night before which we were able to pack and take with us). The breakfasts were good, with fresh fruits, cereal, eggs and juice, and dinner was tasty and very filling. The staff were really nice but only spoke a little bit of english, but we could communicate with our broken spanish and their broken english so it was fine. Also we arranged our accommodation and transport by email in english with no problems.
All in all would highly recommend this place, the park is very beautiful and we loved staying here, just wish we had had more time and could have stayed longer. Thanks Tambopaxi!!

We had a very nice room in the new lodge for two nights. At first there was a miscommunication and we were shown a small room in the main building with no windows, obviously a dorm room meant to shared, but our guide straightened that out quickly. Our room in the new lodge was clean and the views were outstanding. Everything was comfortable. We had the entire place to ourselves before the weekend. The staff made sure we were warm because they brought in firewood and started a fire in our room every evening at 5 pm. The main dining room also had a wood fire going. The staff is shy, but if you know any Spanish at all they are friendly and accommodating. The food was not gourmet, but it was delicious and hit the spot after a hard day climbing Cotopaxi or horseback riding. We brought water with us. You can expect prices to be higher here because it is isolated and difficult to get here. But so worth it. An awe inspiring place--we could not take our eyes off the mountain, and luckily they had a great sunroom and scopes so you could admire Cotapaxi from many perspectives.

Room Tip: Go for the new lodge unless you are on a budget. Try to avoid the weekend.

We spent one night at Tambopaxi in the new lodging. There were 3 of us and the room was plenty large with 5 beds (2 twins in a loft, a double bed and a bunkbed on lower level) with a nice bathroom with excellent showers. It was relatively cold for Ecuador thanks largely to the elevation and there is no heating in the lodge unless you can get the fireplace going, which we did, but we very quickly ran out of cut wood that was small enough to fit in the fire enclosure. As people have noted, the walls are thin and we heard more than we wanted to from other groups at the lodge, particularly from teenagers in the common areas. The common areas are nice with great views of Cotopaxi and Sincholagua. The main building also has a sitting area with a fire, in addition to a restaurant, all with an expanse of windows looking out at the park. We even saw an Andean condor swooping across the hills. As others have noted, the food is serviceable, but also a bit pricey as is the lodging for what you get. So what you are paying for is the view and the convenience of being in the Parque Nacional Cotopaxi itself very close to the volcano. The pickup truck ("taxi") that takes you to Tambopaxi from Machachi is quite a ride as the road is mostly bumpy and not paved. Make sure that the driver understands that he needs to take you into the Parque itself and that you negotiate the price beforehand! In addition to having to argue with the driver when he went to the wrong hostal, we also got stuck at the front entrance to the Parque without having a piece of paper that stated we had a reservation at Tambopaxi. After the unfortunate accident involving a German hiker earlier in the month, the Parque was being really restrictive about entry without a guide and it took at least 30 minutes of discussion before we could get admitted. We also had a bit of a problem getting back. We had asked for a taxi at 1400, but when it didn't come and didn't come the front desk person finally admitted that one of the staff would be taking us to Machachi at the end of his shift at 1500, which then stretched even later and then he ran an errand on the way, which put us in Quito about 2 hours after we had planned.

Tambopaxi is a nice and pretty small lodge, but unbearable if you´re trying to sleep and rest and then summit on the following night. An army of kids was running around until about 2 a.m. and the staff did nothing about it. Walls are thin and you can hear absolutely everything that goes on on the other rooms. Also, even though food was good, it wasn´t plenty, small dishes and very few options, usually either chicken, or chicken. It may be a good spot for tourists, but not for climbers. Had I known it´d be this messy, I would have prefered to camp. Would actually sleep better, cook my own food and eat as much as I´d like.
