Chilcabamba Mountain Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 31, 2014

We stayed 4 nights i Chilcabamba and had a great time! The rooms was super nice, the fireplace very cosy (without it it would have been cold) at night and Jose and Marina were nice hosts. We did some nice hikes around the parc and a tour to Cotopaxi which was excellent. Good value for money!

We were recommended that lodge and quite looking forward going there when we made the reservation. At arrival only an employee was there not speaking other languages than spain. He gave us straight away the most expensive room despite we wanted to see the other rooms. I thought the manager would turn up one day to sort that out, because he said on the phone he would be around. Anyway, no maps provided for the walks around, no advise, the empoyee only tried to sell us a ridiculously expensive trip to cotopaxi (90$, same price as if you go from Quito). After one night we left, since the establishment for 90$ per night could not even be warmed up properly (it was either overheated or you had the outside temperature inside). The restaurant was cold as well. The food was good though but overprized as well. The manager never showed up and talking to the employee was pointless. In the end we just walked away and were not even offered a transport.

The location is wonderful. Just outside the Cotopaxi National Parc with beautiful views from the rooms and living/ dining room onto the Vulcano. Perfect for visiting the area, hiking, climbing or just relaxing. Our room had fireplace, fired every night by our great host Jose. The hacienda is cozy and nice, mountain style decorated. Jose was a very helpful organizer. He organized a mountain guide for the climb of Cotopaxi, let us leave all luggage in the room for the mountain climb night free of charge, so we could come back in the morning after the climb to take a shower, enjoying having our room for another night. Jose helped us to get to town and get in touch with locals. We could make phone calls from his phone, since other phones did not work. Breakfast was excellent, with fresh fruits, granola musli and bread. For the remote mountain location just perfect. The dinner food was quite simple, but taste was ok. Jose doesn't speak English, but we also did not speak Spanish ;). The location is remote, no telephone, internet connection at the lodge, but that's why you are there. Next town Machachi is a 30 min bad road drive away.

Room Tip: Ask for one with fireplace, most have. Beautiful

we stayed 1 night in a double room with shared bathroom.

+ clean room with a very cozy blanket
+ clean and comfortable bathroom
+ cheminé which heats your room in a very romantic way
+ situated in a fantastic landscape with great view on cotopaxi
+ very cozy "dining room/common are"
+ fantastic breakfast included (in quality and quantity)
+ delicious cheese fondue for dinner

what could be improved in our view:
- reply to email requests (or remove your email address from your website)
- the place is not easy accessible by public transport, so provide current bus departure times on your website
- provide an info leaflet upon arrival (we would have stayed and bought more excursions if the information had not been so confusing)

our conclusion: recommended for a romatic night in a fanstatic area. however, do not expect good information on excursions (which are much more expensive than at other places...). several people highly recommended this place to us and our high expectations have not been met because of the not so good tour information...

The place is very cosy, nicely arranged interior, authentic alpaca-ponchos wait for you on your bed and the restaurant room offers a panorama-view onto the famous volcano. There's no cell-phone reception or landline phone (not to speak of internet). The manager operates from Quito (don't expect to see him at his property) and demands a full up-front payment +12% tip onto his swiss bank-account (don't expect a confirmation of payment) which the friendly but non-english speaking staff expects a second time when you leave (don't forget to take a copy of your transaction). Be carful where you choose to sit for dinner if it rains since there are some leaks in the roof, the food is truly delicious though and in 50% of the cases even what you choose.

Room Tip: East building offers view to Cotopaxi.

If you wanna go up to the top of Coto Paxi, then Chilcabamba gives you the best service to make it. Also the preparation or the acclimatisation hikes are great.
After the hikes the wonderful destination with no internet / phone connection gives you all you need to relax and prepare you mentionally for the next day.
Loved it - one of my favorite places!

We stayed there at the beginning of August for 2 nights. Weather was amazing, we did the horseriding which was superb, Saqisili market and the refugio, all highly recommendable. Just to walk around is very relaxing, too and the lodge itself is fantastic, great food, great views, great rooms; the oven is excellent as well! We used drivers and on the back of a pick up is the best way to travel in Ecuador anyways:-)

Room Tip: the ones facing Cotopaxi probably have the best view, but all the ones we saw were good.
