Chilcabamba Mountain Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 6, 2011

Chilcabamba is a wonderful and welcoming place for all natur-loving people who appreciate a tasteful country-style lodging - hikers, trekkers, mountaineers, horse riders, bikers, etc.

Chilcabamba is excellently located on the Paramo not too far from the outside Cotopaxi National Park boundary and embedded between the volcanoes/mountains of Cotopaxi 5'897m, Sincholagua 4'919m, Pasochoa 4'200m, Rumiñahui 4'712m and Corazon 4'786m.

Chilcabamba offers everything appreciated by visitors who do not seek luxury but rather things like a tasteful and pleasant ambience of hospitality, excellent food, friendly and thoughtful personnel as well as excellent value for money.

In short: a location to be highly recommended!

Wow, what a location! A beautifully designed and built rustic lodge made of straw bales with amazing views all around. Surrounded by five volcanoes/mountains. A warm welcome from Marina who looked after us so well. She always had our stove lit in our room for when we returned from our walks, by then in need of a little warmth, and when one of us had a stomach ache Marina made up some oregano tea to help soothe the problem. Chilcabamba is situated outside the park boundary, so we hired a taxi to take us inside the park. I think it would be too far to do a round trip on foot. The park itself is very different, quite a moonscape.
From Machachi the easiest way is to get a pick-up taxi, about 25USD. There is a bus several times a day, if you can find someone who knows where the bus stop is. We caught the bus on the way back which was great, only cost one or two dollars, and much more interesting travelling with the locals. The bus takes about 45 minutes along a cobbled road and wasn't as uncomfortable as it sounds.

Chilcabamba is a small charming lodge providing beautiful views over Cotopaxi. A great place to stay if planning for horseback riding or exploring Cotopaxi area. It is also excellent value for money. The resident dogs are very friendly and fun. The food is simple but tasty and the hospitality great. The swedish oven provides welcome warmth in the room on chilly nights.
The lodge is found at the end of a very bumpy cobbled track (if taking the north route) or a long bumpy dirt track if taking the South route. You need a 4X4 to get there and a map, but if you are prepared for it, even getting there can be a fun adventure.

Chilcabamba was just a perfect stop for us on our 10 day, off the beaten path Ecuador. We were looking for something close to Cotopaxi and wanted a small, boutique feel without paying $300+ a night...this was just perfect! First of all, the setting is just spectacular! Unobstructed views of Cotopaxi, wow. At night you can see so many stars it is just incredible. The grounds and dwellings are painted a warm yellow and red with grass roofs, so charming. Every detail is thought of - the decor cozy and warm, the fireplace in our room was always burning before we returned from dinner or our outings, wonderful thoughtful personnel always a step ahead of every need, meal and plan. We had just an incredible experience overall - and on top of everything, the food is just amazing! I highly recommend this to anyone! We had lazy afternoons, hikes, horseback rides...it was all just a dream, really...

We stayed there in September and loved the place. The lodge is located in a very peaceful area surrounded by volcanos. We saw the Cotopaxi from the very cosy living room - very impressive. The rooms are very comfortable (shower and/or bath) with great style. Flowers (roses) everywhere, decoration in the rooms, lots of brickstones, only natural building material used to build the lodge.
We enjoyed the delicious food (Ecuadorian chicken soup). Reno, the owner of the place, is a great host and took us around for a ride. He also organizes trips to the volcanos, as he is a guide.
I recommend this charming peaceful lodge and would definitely go there again. It's peaceful, a perfect basis camp for hikers, you can horseback ride, ...
