To start is important to all readers to know that all ski resort hotels in Chile and Argentina are way over priced and that is definitely the down side of this and all other ski hotels in South America. Per say, Valle Nevado hotel is a nice hotel in the ski resort of the same name. The staff is extremely nice, the hotel offers a nice lobby and you’re a few feet from the lifts. The rooms are Ok; however they can fit maximum 3 people (2 adults and one children). If you have a family of four, you’ll need two rooms, which makes the trip even more expansive. The hallways are noise during the most of the night. Keep in mind that in the resort there are other cheaper options of hotels…Wi-Fi is free all around the resort. This hotel has the option of three restaurants: Italian, French and International – all of them just Ok, with basic menu and expensive food. Breakfast in the other hand is really good! If your plan is to go to Valle Nevado, Hotel Valle Nevado is still the best option in the resort.

This hotel sits at the base of a beautiful ski area with panoramic views of the Andes. While a vacation at Valle Nevado may well be a rare experience for many North Americans due to its distance as well as the significant costs that will be incurred for airfare, ground transportation, meals and lodging, it is an experience that is well worth the expense nevertheless.

Check In
We arrived early on a Friday morning in July. Each of our drivers was from Portillo Tours & Travel. They were both very experienced in mountain driving and needed to be as the road from Santiago to Valle Nevado even in good weather is dangerous. The journey is not for the faint of heart as a driver must navigate forty hairpin turns on a narrow road full of potholes and ice. Try to plan an arrival on a weekday to avoid the traffic from Santiago on weekends. I would not want to be on that road in heavy traffic.

The front desk personnel - Macarena and Danielle were very friendly and attentive to our needs. They had no difficulty communicating in English and made sure to take the time to answer our questions and welcome us to the resort. Both of these ladies would smile when they saw us during our stay and gladly assisted us with dinner reservations or any other issue that arose.

Our room was not ready when we completed check in around 10:00 in the morning, but that was not a problem. We were given lanyards with our lift passes and told that we could store our luggage for the day, change in the spa locker room and hit the slopes. The gentlemen responsible for our baggage were very friendly and, like the front desk staff, would always greet us with a smile and offer any help or suggestions when needed.

The Ski Equipment Room
One of the main perks of staying at the Hotel Valle Nevado is access to Gabriel - the man in charge of the ski equipment room. Located right off of the lobby, hotel guests walk in and are greeted by Gabriel who is ready to check their ski bag and shoes for the day and hand out the skis, boots and other equipment that were checked for the night. There are two benches in the room to use while getting in or out of your boots. You can check your skis as many times as you wish during the day and it is great to have lunch while wearing sandals or sneakers, rather than ski boots. Gabriel would see us walking from the slopes toward his room and have our equipment ready by the time we arrived at his door. It was readily apparent that guests appreciated his service.

Rental Shop
The ski shop employees were good about moving the lines along and providing equipment. The rates are not cheap, but are comparable to what you would find in Colorado or Vermont when renting at the mountain.

The Hot Tub
This large hot tub is located on a deck between the Italian restaurant and the Hotel Puerta Del Sol. At least two nights while we were there, the resort had a pool party complete with DJ and bartender. These staff members have to endure wind and snow while performing their tasks while guests enjoy the atmosphere. The hot tub does get crowded during the pool party.

There are lounge chairs around the hot tub that are great for using to enjoy an afternoon nap in the sun. Hotel security was diligent in making sure that visitors who were not hotel guests vacated the lounge chairs during the afternoon so that guests could make use of the chairs.

It is a long walk back from the pool to the Hotel Valle Nevado - especially at night so it makes sense to take the bathrobe that each Valle Nevado guest is provided with and change in the Puerta Del Sol restrooms before heading back to your room.

The Rooms
We had a room facing the Valley and as another poster commented, the view from these rooms is fantastic. Our room was located on the fifth floor right next to the kids' club. We were worried that we would be bombarded with the sounds of screaming kids. Our worries were unfounded as the walls were thick enough to prevent any noise from coming through.

There is a flat screen TV with access to CNN International as well as local programming. The WiFi did not work in our room at all though the public WiFI in the lobby worked fine. There is a small deck outside the room to sit outside and admire the view over the valley. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of space inside, but for the price we paid, the rooms could have been nicer. It did not help that the housekeeper did not clean our room each day until after 4:30, but granted, we were skiing most of the day so the timing of our room cleaning did not bother us. The hotel provides an evening turn down service and a safe in the closet. Our room was equipped with a vaporizer that we used each night.

Restaurants
Food in Chile in general is expensive whether in Santiago or in Valle Nevado so be prepared. Breakfast and dinner were included in our package. Notably, drinks, including sparkling water (Agua con or sin gas) are not included (other than at breakfast where coffee, water and juice are provided at no extra charge). Even non-alcoholic drinks are expensive. The charges for these drinks can certainly add up.

Breakfast for Hotel Valle Nevado guests is provided in La Fourchette -the French restaurant. The buffet was large and varied. The service was fine each day. We were treated to an assortment of fruits, breads, nuts, cheeses and especially smoked salmon. A cook prepared eggs to order with an assortment of sides. We loved the food there and were made to feel like honored guests by the staff. The windows overlook both the valley and the slopes providing a great atmosphere for breakfast. We decided that La Fourchette was also our favorite for dinner. The wine list was impressive and the various fish dishes offered were quite tasty. We enjoyed the Chilean Sea Bass and the Pacific Tuna.

Dinner at the Mirador del Plomo at the Puerta Del Sol is an all you can eat buffet - watch your waist line! A very large salad bar, pasta station and dessert bar await you in addition to the preparation of meats and fish. We thought that the food was good as was the service. The Italian restaurant Don Giovanni was the lesser of the three (excluding Bajo Zero bar and grill for lunch). It is open for a very expensive lunch that simply is not worth the bill - 21000 Chilean pesos per person excluding beverages. Service was not a problem at any restaurant (excluding Bajo Zero)

The Hotel Valle Nevado provides complimentary hot chocolate each day at 5:00 at the hotel bar. Apres Ski is apparently rotated among the hotels. One night complimentary champagne was served at our hotel for Apres Ski.

The Skiing
We sure lucked out with the weather. Four and an half days out of five had brilliant blue skies with comfortable temperatures and ample snow on the ground thanks to a good size storm that hit the area shortly before our arrival. The trails are wide and very much suited to skiers who like blue trails. There were relatively few trails open that would qualify as double black diamonds at Colorado, Utah or Vermont resorts. Valle Nevado separates its intermediate terrain into blue and red trails. At times during the week, it felt like we had the whole trail to ourselves. The lift lines were small except on the weekend when Chileans came in large numbers due to the start of school vacation and good weather. The lifts were efficiently run but the staff will be sure to check your lift pass each time. There are a number of Poma lifts. These take a bit of getting used to if you have never had the pleasure of using one before.

Check out and Skiing
The hotel requires guests to check out by 10:00am, but doing so does not hamper your ability to ski the rest of the day. The front desk staff provided us with credentials to allow us lift access for the full day at no extra cost. Our luggage was stored for us just as it was at check in and we were able to utilize all of the hotel's services until we departed. It makes sense to have transportation back to Santiago scheduled for the late afternoon in order to take advantage of the last day of skiing.

It makes sense to take advantage of early booking discounts offered by travel providers. We hope to come back again one day.

A good hotel just in front of the ski. If your are looking for a nice place for skiing, this is the one in Chile. The hotel is a bit expensive for what it offers, but is very well located, with large and clean rooms. The personnel is very nice, but the front desk needs improvement.
The only drawback was the restaurants. The food was not very good and the service lacks professionalism. If you arrive late, as 9:00 pm, you may not find a lot of dishes....That`s sad for an breakfast and dinner included.
But they have a great massage and gym, to relax after ski.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the valley.

With a little of fear, because of other travelers reviews, we arrive to Valle. We were looking for some good days of skiing in a comfortable place to rest.

First of all, we enjoy the mountain a lot. Hotel location couldn't be better. The lifts were in excellent conditions and except for one day, there were very agile.

We haven't had any trouble at our arrival at the front desk. Rooms were fine, not luxiurius. If you compare what you may get as a 5 star in downtown or in a beach, certainly you may expect more.

Ski room is just a few steps away from the slopes with excellent service.

Restaurants (we tried the french and italian), were superb but the gold was for the french one. It was a bit difficult to have a seat at noon in the bar lounge to have a light meal.

We had a great experience, it is expensive but we'll love to come back.

THE BAD: The road up is dangerous often with winter conditions at the top. We use a private driver that drives the road frequently. The hotels can arrange it. The official bus up has people getting car sick from all the switchbacks. If you grab a random cab from SCL the driver may not ever have driven on snow before much less have 4 wheel drive or chains. (This has happened to us before) .All 3 of these old hotels have small rooms with tiny beds and pillows made of solid rock. TV is 8" square. Children monopolize the computers in the lobby 24/7. Though we always stay her in the winter(Sept) , the only fireplace in the whole resort which is in this hotel's lobby is always dark and cold---no fire in the entire ski resort!! This is what I miss the most. Architectural style is "cement slab" painted unnaturally bright colors. The food i bad in general. Stick with basic pasta. US prices for everything. I always lose weight here. Insure or watch your skis and boards closely---banditos!
THE GOOD: The skiing here is like nowhere else in the world. Wide open, treeless and groomed with spectacularly deep and dry snow. Many bluebird days are mild with the snow staying dry and sparkly since the air is soooo dry. A humidififier is a must and some may want eye and nose saline drops, too. It's easy to sunburn this far south-wear lots of sunscreen. I am told Valle Nevado has the only high-speed quad in S. America. Apres ski is a DJ rockin it on the outside patios and a hot tub on the deck that fits about 30 body- to -body. Pretty fun In Sept there are many Northern Hemisphere ski teams training here but other than that it's mostly S. Americans.

We stayed at Hotel Valle Nevado in the middle of August 2011.
The lobby is beautifully decorated, with many couches and some computers with free internet, also free wifi only works there.
The rooms are very large and there were two single beds joined to look like a big double bed. There was a couch, and a big plasma tv, and many channels available. There was an ipod dock and an eletronic safe to put our passports and money. The bathroom was a good size, but a bit on the shower area. The products like shampoo, soap, etc, were excellent. There was a big wardrobe. Everyhting was very clean and confortable.
I needed to rent only snowboard boots and the rental services are very slow, you´ll find big lines if don´t get there very early.
The hotel has a ski room, where you leave your skis and boots in the end of the day and get them in the morning, and it exits very close to the slopes. The guy working there was very helpful.
The fitness center is alright, there is free classes of stretching and yoga in the afternoon, which is good, and many other equipments for working out.
At night, there is a Pub at the hotel Tres Puntas that offers pool table and live music, but it is never very crowded, in fact it is kind of empty most of the times. But it is better than nothing, at least it´s something to do at night after dinner.
The hot tub is located in the middle of the 3 hotels and is good to have it, but there´s only one and sometimes, especially at 5:30 it gets so crowded that you can barelly stay in without touching anyone around you.
Concerning breakfast at the hotel, it is very good, there is a big variety of food, including omelets prepared in front of you, but I think they could offer more fresh fruits, there are only dried or canned fruits.
About dinner: the two best restaurants are La Fourchete (french food) and Don Giovani (italian). The other at the hotel Puerta del Sol is an average buffet and the one at the Hotel Tres Puntas is terrible. But the first two are excelent, the food is amazing and you eat a lot!
But WATCH OUT FOR THE WAITERS! KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS OF THE DINNER BILLS! When I checked out, I was verifying all the values on the receipts kept by me and the ones the reception received from the restaurants and they were different!!! The waiters altered the amount of money in the bill after I signed the bill and left the restaurant and I´m sure they are succesfull in their scheme because many people don´t keep the receipts! These waiters should be identified and fired imediately.
But skiing there is great, the slopes are nice, although the lift operators are not very nice and helpful.
In all, I would go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: best rooms are those with the varandas facing a valley, instead of the ones facing the slopes.

I stayed at the "five" star property at Valle Nevado, Chile with my family and a group of 10 "gringos" in a total of 7 rooms. The hotel is three stars at best. The rooms are rundown and have no sense of style. We were charged US$1,550 a room (to be fair dinner & lift tickets were included for two people). The St. Regis in Aspen is much less money. In fact I can't think of a hotel I have every stayed at where the relation between cost and quality was so distorted. If would have been far less expensive and more enjoyable to stay at the Ritz Carlton or W Hotel in Santiago and pay the US$300 helicopter ride each day to ski....
