We made this trip in a small group of 4 together with the English speaking German guide Frank. Franks positive and inspiring attitude made this a very enjoyable hike.

I stayed at the Casa Chueca for a few days, and I enjoyed that, but what i really enjoyed was the hint of the people working there to go on some tours. I went down to the cost at the dunas de putu, which was incredible! The dunes give just a unbelievable landscape and the colour is just amazing! I also went with him on some other tours, but relly to mention is the Cascada the Arcoiris, this Area is just so unreal, forget about Vilches and the tours, this area is just one of the best places you can be in Chile! Having a bath just before the water drops 50m is just incredible, I guess there are not many spots where you can do that, so if you get round to talca, GO THERE it is certain must which is not recommended in a Lonely Planet or something like that!

We were a group from the UK, and stayed in Santa Cruz for a couple of days, after that we decided to go to Talca and contacted Costa y Cumbre tours.
We've never been trekking before and to be honest this trip was great, it exceeded all our expectations. We were aware that the tour guide was a bit shy, but he made our day by taking us to many places nice places in one day. We think the reason for this (shyness) was that this company was relatively new but he made a very good effort to keep us entertained all the time!. I think, if you go as a solo tourist, you might not be able to find the hidden spots we saw with Costa y Cumbre, unless you speak very good Spanish...
Our tour guide knows the area well and because we had a great time the first day, we decided to take another tour the following day. Again, it was great in spite of the weather!!. Another plus is his recommendations about where to eat traditional food which was greatly appreciated by all of us.

Costa y Cumbre tours offers several tours, not only day tours. The company consists of one guide from Germany.

I did a two day hike. Even though the guide may be an experienced hiker himself, he lacks experience as a guide. He has little knowledge of the nature and geological specialties, so it was mostly walking, and no learning about Chile and the region.

I cannot really recommend this. Maybe he will be better in a year or two, but i would rather recommend to choose a guide who know more about the area he or she is showing you. The area was REALLY nice, so go :-) With another guide, or go by your self, it isn't very difficult if you have been out hiking before.

NOTE: At the time I was there, the Costa y cumbre tours had only been to the volcano descabezado once before (in a group). I thought that guides at least shold have experienced different weather conditions before offering a guided tour there....
