We stayed at one of the bungalows (Voltaire) and had a gorgeous ocean and rainforest view from the room and the hammocks in the balcony. Very private, romantic and incredibly relaxing! Staff were very nice and bent over backwards to help me when I fell ill on our second day there. I'm sure there are much cheaper pousadas on the island, but Portaló is worth every cent!

My fiancé and I tried very hard to hold our wedding at Hotel Portalo as it was our dream site. We met with staff and decided to book out the entire hotel for all of our guests for 3 days. After the first meeting with staff, in which they were extremely nice and helpful, things just got worse and worse. We were never given any information, always told that information would be sent to us, which never arrived, we were outright lied to about important details, and were treated as if we were scum. Eventually we were insulted by staff verbally, who would not even speak to us on the phone, even after receiving payments for the hotel. After 4 months of trying to make things work it became abundantly clear that the Hotel Portalo is terribly unprofessional and disrespectful and we were forced to cancel our wedding plans there. Absolutely horrible service, completely unprofessional, and a waste of time and energy.

Do yourself a favour - only pay for this hotel if you would like to pay to be treated poorly, as that is exactly what you will get.

My husband and I really wanted to 'spoil' ourselves and go for a more expensive hotel while on a well-deserved vacation. I did SOOO much research and after the reviews on tripadvisor decided on this one. Honestly, I was so disappointed. The rooms themselves (unlike some of the other reviews) we were very pleased with. We had the Jose De Alencar chale and thought is was very beautiful. It had a nice big living room and then a seperate main bedroom where are child slept so it was perfect for naps etc. The grounds themselves are well-kept and the pool is really nice. We never had any problems with the staff either.
The BIG problem for us was the noise. Like in other reviews the location is right on the docking area. It is 'ok' for people watching but the real draw-back is the constant hollaring, horns and music blaring from this area. Even in the pool area of the hotel they put music all day long. Honestly, we just wanted to get some rest and have a bit of peace and quiet which was absolutely the opposite of what we got. The horns start at about 6/6:30 am and the music stops about 10 pm.
I think this hotel could be ideal for a younger couple interested in partying or people who live in big cities and are used to this noise (definitely not us). Even for someone with limited mobility could be comfortable here as its location prevents from having to 'commute' to other beaches. However if you're looking to rest up like we were, I would highly suggest looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: Honestly I think they all have noise from the port area!

The location of this hotel is wonderful, its right beside where the pier where the boat docks so you don't need to pay for a porter for your bags (you should if you stay anywhere else because the hill from the docks is very steep!). However being near the pier isn't a problem it doesn't intrude as its not very busy or noisy and can be pleasant to people watch. There are stunning views from the pool and terrace bar/restaurant (which does good food at a reasonable price) of the sea and the sunset. This sets the hotel apart and makes it very special. If the this is enough for you to accept the cost then definitely go, however if you are looking for a room to match - don't its terribly overpriced!

We had a 'suite' next to the pool which was huge but very sparsely furnished in 1970's style. When I say basic I mean there wasn't even a hot and cold tank in the bathroom sink - just a cold one! We stayed 2 nights and our towels weren't changed and there was no where appropriate to hang and dry them. The bed however was comfy and the room clean. There was a large breakfast buffet which was very nice. But it certainly wasn't worth the money.

They played music all day by the pool and this intruded into our room but it was only 10am-10pm so didn't disturb our sleeping. Some days the music wasn't too bad but our first day it was set way to loud and wasn't very pleasant by the pool.

Go for the view, the nice food and the good service but not the room..

Eating tip - go to the second beach, the first major restaurant you come to with tables on the sand does excellent seafood.

On our trip to Brasil we spent 7 nights in the Portaló Hotel. If you go to the Morro Island by Catamaran, you can walk to the hotel as it is on the right side of the harbor.
We booked via booking.com a chalet superior (the description in the website was: separated loungued area, sofa, bathrobes, veranda...) However, the chalet superior we had was a tiny bungalow (Fernando Pessoa) with amazing views nonetheless (a small bedroom, a small wardrobe and a bathroom with a nice veranda. We complained about at the reception desk and they told us that it was the fault from booking which appear to be true (they are currently checking our complaint).
As I mentioned the bungalow was pretty small and we could not hang up our clothes, specially when you are travelling around the country for 18 days. Nevertheless, the room was nice, simple and clean.
The property was well maintained and the staff was very nice. However, they could be more pro active on the services they offer as it was the last day we discovered there was a spa. There was no guest book in our room with more information about services and facilities offered by the hotel.
Breakfast was generous but after a week it could be repetitive.
The good side of the hotel is that it is close to everything and the bungalows provided for privacy.
The food at the swimming pool bar was lovely and the cocktails as well (specially a lady called Jo, not sure, her coctails were fantastic!!).
Overall, we highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Don't go for a standard room as they look tiny and they are close to the swimming pool where it...
