Villa Guaiamu Hotel

A nice little family run B&B (Italians) on beach #3 on Morro de Sao Paulo. Simple bungalow style accommodations on gorgeous grounds surrounded by massive palm trees, exotic vegetation and home to countless little blue crabs that make their home all around the grounds and the island. Morro de Sao Paulo is quite the party spot and attracts a lot of younger travelers from all over the world (though the overwhelming majority are still Brazilians luckily), yet staying at this hotel feels much more ecotourism than it does compared to the island once you're on Beach #2 and into the town (which is a bit more backpacker party spot depending on the night and location). We loved the island as having everything you'd want from a great party one night to peace, quiet and relaxation on another night if you wanted. The restaurant at the hotel had the best Moqueca I've had and was far better than the one I had at the "famous" Sorriso de Dada in Pelorinho in Salvador. My only complaint (and this is nitpicking) would be that the a/c didn't cool down the room much (though I'm someone that is always hot) and was noisy when on, the tide goes out quite far on the beach at times making the beach unswim-able when the tide is out so having a pool like some of the other pousadas and B&Bs would be a nice perk (though these are at odd times so it's not much of an issue).

I chose this place partly because the Brandt Guide claimed it served the best Italian meals on the Island. In actual fact the restaurant at the entrance is leased to an Italian by the owners.
That said its meals were the best we had in 3 weeks in Brazil. The staff were very nice and attentive if, without, the boss, a wee bit disorganised at times. Also excellent value and on a par
with cooking in Europe.
The Vila staff were also excellent. Breakfast was superb. But the real joy of this place is that
it is secluded and quiet, bursting with wildlife and birds . One can wander in the area behind
it for ages without seeing a soul. The rooms are not luxurious but are spacious. We never used the TV in a week,Wi fi is free.Being on the 3rd beach means that it is less hassle to get to the empty and wonderful 4th and 5th beaches without having to run the gauntlet of the hucksters nearer the town. Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Choose one at the back of the grounds

This is a very special place. Unique, surrounded by a mad word. Morro de São Paulo, is now a flashy destination in Brazil. With flashy places and people. Villa Guaiamu, one of the first hotel in in the island, preserves the authentic island feeling , in a natural reserve, with trees, and shadow, and coconuts and of course Guaiamus crabs that they protect from fishermen. This is place to forget everything, even the madness of a hype village just 200 metres nearby. Littles chalets in the woods, quietness, and smiles form everyone.

Room Tip: Best room is number 16, without any doubt !

As if the island of Morro de Sao Paulo wasn't heaven itself.....

This pousada is located between 3rd and 4th beach, a 5 min walk away from the hustle and bustle of 2nd beach. The little cabins (humble, yet functional - great water pressure!) are spread on a vast property of palm trees, beautiful fauna everywhere, and native island wildlife (birds, crabs and little lizzards). The little blue crabs are only a little part of the charm of the pousada - although I did take 253 pictures of the little crawlers myslef....just beautiful.

You can literally spend an entire day in the pousada, relaxing in your hammock and listening to the birds, and still be amused! The breakfast was fantastic - the best spread we had on our entire trip.

If you are in Salvador - you MUST pay a visit to Morro. If you are in Morro, you MUST stay at this Pousada (we were there for 5 days, and I could have still stayed for 5 more!)

Amidst fashionable and flashy new pousadas, that is a place to meet real life on the island. 10 minutes by foot from busy night life however, it is a perfect match between nature and pleasure. Protecting environment and wild life (crabs and trees), a friendly welcome, a gorgeous breakfast.

Breakfast and staff are great/ attentive.
It feels very nice to be surrounded by guaiamus (crabs)
The rooms have a very good size with lcd tv (didn't use) and split a/c.
But the bed and linen could be much better.
At night a lot of ants walking around, there could be a way of killing them.

Room Tip: rooms closer to the entrance

First, if you geta chance to visit Morro de Sao Paolo by all means jump at the chance. It is amazing.
The Guaiamu is on the third beach, Second beach is where all the action is but third beach is just a 5 minute stroll. Watch out for high tide though, it gets a bit tricky unless you just say what the heck and get wet. It is about a 20 minute walk from the dock. Definitely hire someone to carry your luggage, its only R$10/Bag.
The Pousada itself is set back from the beach in the jungle amongst the protected crabs which are everywhere and very fun to watch. We also spied a couple monkeys. Because it is in the jungle definitely buy or bring some insect repellent. After the first night I ran to the store. Judging by the number of mosquito carcasses on the walls I was not the only one that had this problem. With repellent everything was fine.
The jungle is an amazing setting for this Pousada. Just beautful. There are three rooms per building and each has its own hammock. They are all spread out so you get the feeling fo total isolation. Its wonderful.
The rooms are decent size, small by US standards, large by European. There is a tv, AC, mini bar. The bathroom is large and the entire thing feels very 'Fantasy Island'. There are no windows or screens, only shutters.
There is no wifi, no phone, and I didnt bother turning on the TV, it seemed sacreligious in this setting.
The ambience of this place was just breath taking. Totally worth it.
The part I had trouble with, and the reason I cannot in good faith rate the property higher is the bed and the linens. The bed was flat, firm and dirty. The linens were maybe 100 thread count and felt like gauze. I could literally see through them. The pillows had a 'musty' smell. I would encourage the property to invest in some new mattresses, pillows and linens. Also, in this humid environment I would suggest some heavy duty mattress pads and pillow protectors to ensure longevity. I am sure it is tough on them.
Other than that, I would encourage anyone to give it a shot, its a great property in a great locale.
