“One of the most unusual hostels I've stayed in”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

i stayed at the hostel for 3 nights and it was quite an interesting experience, in good and bad ways.

First of all the location of the property is its best and worst point. It is located about a 5 minute walk from the main drag and hence is quiet and has the additional benefit of an awesome view over one of the beaches. The downside is that it is located half way up a steep hill and it can be quite tiring to traipse up a down this hill, particularly with heavy luggage. The property is well secured with a main gate.

In regards to service, I would say it's typically Bahian - half baked, haphazard, but friendly. Due to the gate, i had to wait about 20 minutes and multiple rings of the bell before someone let me in when I arrived. I was about 2 minutes away from leaving before a guest happened to return and let me in. it was all fairly smooth from there on though. The guy looking after the property is very friendly and will certainly make you feel welcome (especially attractive female guests!!!), though no English is spoken by any of the staff.

Kitchen amenities are decent and I managed to whip up a pasta on one night and cook a pizza on the other. The water cooler in the common area is available to guests and will save you valuable reais on the over-priced water available on the island

Things start to get strange when it comes to price. It doesn't seem like there is any fixed price and it's almost as if they charge according to how dumb they think you look. I was quoted R100 for a private, R45 for a tent, and R60 for a dorm. I managed to land a private for 60 though after I found out that's what a fellow guest was paying and mentioned it to the staff.

The breakfast is decent by Brazilian standards and appropriate for a hostel, though couples staying in a private and paying over R100 may be disappointed.

One of the annoying things about the hostel is that they charge an additional R5 per day for internet access, which is an almost unheard of practice in Brazil. There are also additional charges for towel rental.

There is a laundry service available, though again the price varies according to who you ask. I was quoted R1 per item by one staff member one day and asked another the next day who quoted me R2 per item, claiming that the additional charge was for the laundry powder. After I explained to her that I could buy 2 whole boxes of laundry powder with the additional charge she was trying to extract the price was dropped to R1.5 and then R1 when she realised I wasn't interested.

One of the strangest things about the hostel is the lack of guests. There were 2 on the first night and 4 on the second while the other hostels in town were packed. This place is apparently prominently displayed in the latest Lonely Planet so I can only imagine that the trek to get here is what's keeping the guests away. For backpackers seeking a bit of tranquility and perhaps a bargain priced single room this may be the place. If seeking a party hostel, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Not on ground floor as you'd cop a lot of noise from the breakfast area from about 8am onwards
