I travel extensively for both business and pleasure, and have been to Israel many times. Prior to traveling to the Dead Sea this go-around, I spoke to friends in Israel and read the other reviews on this site, many of which gave this hotel negative reviews, so I initially booked the Golden Tulip, but that lasted all of one night before I switched to Le Meridien.

This hotel is now part of the Starwood family, and the difference between it and other hotels in the area is dramatic. The lobby is indeed impressive, and the service was professional and courteous, which is equally impressive by Israeli standards (not known for service).

The room was very clean, and my "smoking" room here smelled better than many "non-smoking" rooms and cars I've had in Israel. The bathroom is impressive and was very clean. The food was great at all meals, though breakfast could use some healthier fare, but the dinner was impressive, especially when compared to the Golden Tulip.

The beach is indeed a short walk from the hotel, but far from other shores and hence very private. They could use a real bathroom (rather than port-a-potties) and a water cooler there, but the setting is serene. The gym is very clean and well equipped, though lacking free-weights, but at least it stays open until 6 (at the Golden Tulip it was more of a "fitness room" and closed at 5).

The evening entertainment at this hotel was surprisingly good, making for a very enjoyable experience overall.
