“Watkins Glen and Senaca Lake Wineries”
Reviewed August 3, 2008

Although we stayed in Geneva, we drove along the scenic route of Seneca Lake to Watkins Glen..there are lots of wineries along the way, but we went to Watkins Glen State Park. Its very easy to get to, as it is right on the main road that runs through the town.
The State Park is really amazing..although you have approx. 800 steps to climb, if you want to do all the trails....
The day we went it was sunny, with the humidity hitting 35 degrees, so within 5 mins of walking, we were sweating!!! I suggest you go on a less humid day, and I think it would be magnificent in the fall....
Driving back along Seneca Lake to our hotel in Geneva, we stopped off at 3-4 wineries, and did some testing and shopping..

“Main Street is closed except for Race cars”
Reviewed January 30, 2006

The 1st Friday after the Labor Day weekend in the town of Watkins Glen there is an event that is called the Grand Prix Street Festival. On Friday afternoon, Main Street (Franklin Street or Route 14) is closed and they have what is called "Race Reenactment" which honors cars from the early days of street racing in Watkins Glen. At the race track just outside of town, the SVRA or Sportcar Vintage Racing Association has practice and actual races thru the weekend. If you are a car nut, it is the place to be. There are a few events you can participate in at the local wineries whereby you get to take laps on the street course, be in rallies and have lunch at the winery. You do not need a race car to participate in the fun.

“Watkins Glen is beautiful”
Reviewed August 13, 2003

Watkins Glen is a typical small tourist town at the southern end of Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in central New York. The town is a typical mixture of visitor oriented shops, though with a little more emphasis on antiques than many similar settings.

The town derives it's name from the Watkin's Glen Gorge, a beautiful narrow valley cut deeply through the limestone rock of the area. The gorge is now a state park located right in town, and accessed from the main route through town. For the young and robust, hike from the bottom to the top and back again ( probably about 3 or 4 miles total walking distance). For those whose legs have too many miles on them, it is much easier to take the free shuttle from the lower parking lot to the top, and walk down to your parked car. This hike still involves something in the realm of 830 steps (mostly descending), so it does require some endurance. It is definitely worth the effort, with beautiful waterfalls and a pristine stream flowing the length of the park.

While in the area, be sure to experience the wine tasting and tours at the numerous wineries in the area. Cruises on many of the lakes are available and there are many attractions available in the area. The Curtiss Aviation Museum near Hammondsport on Keuka Lake is a "must see" for the history or flying enthusiasts.

A beautiful area to relax and unwind.
