Well worth the several hours to hike (saunter realy) up and back. Recommend Indain Trail for the return.

We arrived at Watkins Glen with a friend who is unable to walk any appreciable distance. Undeterred by the boast of 832 steps to the top of the gorge, she tried just thirty-three. It got her to the Sentry Bridge, just inside the gorge, while we walked up forty-four more to the final cascading waterfalls and the beginning of the really arduous climb. She was able to take our picture from her spot, as well as see much the same view as we had just above her. (Years ago, with our three children in tow, we hiked down from the top of the gorge to the entrance, and there was noting more spectacular along the entire route than this final series of cascades.) It had rained the day before, so the water flow was very active. We also enjoyed the wonderful rock formations and the tunnel that had been hollowed out when the power of the water had been tapped. The park is working on the entrance ramp/steps from the parking lot now, so the entrance should be even more attractive by next year. I've included three photos. For what we visited, a single hour will do.

This was our third time up, we try to make it an annual trip to finger lakes wineries and to also visit the Gorge. Monday mornings it is quiet, no people. Great for picture taking. The water flow was low this year but it is still a very special place and we love it.

WHAT A BIG POOL!! Very clean. Lifeguards all over. Plenty of places to sit (benches and lounge chairs - but get there early). Showers, lockers, bathroom all right there. Plenty of parking.

What a great sight to see. Its been a draught up in NY this year, so the gorge was WAY below normal water levels, so I feel I got to the rock formation you normally wouldn't. If you like taking photos, you be there a long time. Even in 90 degree weather, it was comfortable (not buggy at all). I suggest starting at the upper entrance and walk DOWN to main entrance, then take bus back. Going at dusk gave it a different vibe. If you stay at the Seneca Lodge, you can walk in the south entrance. This is an easy walk. Simply Stunning
