Visited Lectoure today (Friday) for market day. Decided to have lunch in the Bast ard's sunny terrace and and as we arrived just before service at 12.00, we were the sole customers. Choose a nice table for two overlooking the pool. Although we addressed the maitre d' in French she immeadiatly spoke to us in English, unlike all our usual experiences in the Gers.
When I got back from a comfort break, we had been moved to a centre table on the terrace. My wife informed me that, as we had opted for the E18.00 formule as opposed to a la carte, we could not have the original table.
Nice puree of lentil soup with mushrooms but the main course (plat du jour) was a dried piece of very tough steak and had to ask for steak knifes. By now, the place had filled up a bit and imagine our surprise when a French couple who were shown to our original table ordered and choose the formule!
My wife queried the maitre d' and was told with an icy and unconvincing smile that they had reserved it. Rubbish! So why did she just not simply tell us earlier that the table was reserved? When we asked, she just huffed and walked off.
The only saving grace was that we struck up with an English/German couple next to us who have lived in the Gers for many years and invited us to visit them for lunch.
To add more insult, my second long black coffee was just shoved down in front of me in an oversided cup with no petite chocolate.
Overall a nice location but a pity about the cold service and the harried, unhappy waiters who obviously suffer under the thumb of Mme B.
