Description: The DeBastard restaurant is the restaurant of the hotel of the eponym name situated in a mansion of the end of the 18th century, right in the heart of the city of Lectoure. Close below the Cathedral, you will be welcomed in a beautiful environment where you will enjoy a "bistronomic" cuisine for lunch on weekdays and more gastronomic for the dinner and the weekend. In the summer months, you will settle down on the terrace of the inner courtyard of the building and will have a magnificent view by above the roofs of Lectoure and on the surrounding countryside. Conviviality is our key word. You will find it in the plate with delicious dishes concocted by the chef Pascal, but also by the welcoming and during all the service. We would be pleased if you would leave after spending with us a really delightfull moment where food and wine will be for the honor.

Visited Lectoure today (Friday) for market day. Decided to have lunch in the Bast ard's sunny terrace and and as we arrived just before service at 12.00, we were the sole customers. Choose a nice table for two overlooking the pool. Although we addressed the maitre d' in French she immeadiatly spoke to us in English, unlike all our usual experiences in the Gers.

When I got back from a comfort break, we had been moved to a centre table on the terrace. My wife informed me that, as we had opted for the E18.00 formule as opposed to a la carte, we could not have the original table.

Nice puree of lentil soup with mushrooms but the main course (plat du jour) was a dried piece of very tough steak and had to ask for steak knifes. By now, the place had filled up a bit and imagine our surprise when a French couple who were shown to our original table ordered and choose the formule!

My wife queried the maitre d' and was told with an icy and unconvincing smile that they had reserved it. Rubbish! So why did she just not simply tell us earlier that the table was reserved? When we asked, she just huffed and walked off.

The only saving grace was that we struck up with an English/German couple next to us who have lived in the Gers for many years and invited us to visit them for lunch.

To add more insult, my second long black coffee was just shoved down in front of me in an oversided cup with no petite chocolate.

Overall a nice location but a pity about the cold service and the harried, unhappy waiters who obviously suffer under the thumb of Mme B.

Lots of options in Lectoure for a lunch menu but this one is really good.
Ask for the "plat du jour" and you will be seated in the bar instead of the restaurant. The bar is decorated with posters of the bull fight festival in nearby Vic-Fezensac.

This review is for the restaurant only, as we stayed elsewhere.

We'd eaten at this hotel's restaurant three years ago, and been impressed with the quality of the food, the setting and the value, so we were eager to try again. We were, however, very disappointed. The cooking has got considerably more complex and inventive (presumably in pursuit of a Michelin star), and was competent in the sense that the kitchen obviously knows how to prepare food that looks spectacular. Sadly they have absolutely no idea which tastes go with which. Duck breast was roasted with a spicy nut crust, and served with a red fruit compote and a polenta gallette which to our astonishment was flavoured with cheese. I don't know if you have tried the combination of duck, nuts, red fruit, polenta and cheese, but having done so I don't recommend it. My wife's fish came with a stunningly beautiful fish-skin "crisp", which sadly had the texture of perspex. She couldn't comment on the flavour because it was physically impossible to chew.

The approach of this restaurant seemed to be to prepare and serve their ingredients in complex combinations which no-one else has yet thought of (regardless of the resulting taste) on strangely shaped plates, preferably with some aspect of the food pointing vertically upwards to make a statement. We would so much have preferred to have traditional Gascon dishes cooked really well, with a twist or two (but not five) if they really have to.

A shame, because the setting, which is almost mediaval, is beautiful, the wine was excellent, and the service more than satisfactory.
