Owner description: Built a thousand years ago on a gigantic rock, this magnificent fortress rises above one of the most beautiful villages in the Aveyron region of France. A self-guided tour, rich with historical information, leads visitors over the moat and throughout the castle and its grounds. Only recently was this private chateau, with its lush courtyards, medieval chapels, prison and superb views, opened to the public. Fernand Pouillon, architect, visionary and award-winning author and Officer of the Légion d'Honneur, devoted himself completely to the restoration of Château de Belcastel after he discovered it in ruins in 1973.

“Epic and enchanting getaway”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

This beautiful castle sparkles with 1000 years of history. From the working drawbridge to the full moat, this was my first visit to France and The castle was the highlight of my trip. There was fresh lavender growing
everywhere and beautiful sites. There were a few amazing restaurants in the village and a beautiful church. My Mom and I enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend a visit to this historical castle.

“A rare romantic experience”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

This is a beautifully restored 10th-century castle perched on a hill overlooking the river Aveyron, some 60km north of Albi. At the foot of the hill is a charming old village. The castle itself is fascinating and well worth a visit; but what makes it even more special is that it includes a single private suite that you can book for the night: a large sitting-room, a bathroom and, upstairs, an extremely comfortable bedroom with a king-size bed. The castle closes to visitors around 6, but you're given your own key and from then on you have this 1,000-year-old castle entirely to yourselves for the night. The next morning you're brought breakfast, which you can enjoy on a little private patio overlooking the courtyard of the castle.

What more romantic place to stay?

“Medieval times alive in the present”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

Don't miss a visit to Belcastel, voted one of the ten most beautiful villages in France. The restored medieval castle is magnificent architecturally and most interesting historically. An excellent self-guided tour is available. The castle is also a gallery for a few modern artists. Owners Heidi Leigh and Nick Leone have created a must-visit attraction.. It offers a beautiful tower suite for overnight guests. The town has a gourmet restaurant, a beautiful church of Mary Magdalene, and an audio guided walking tour, all very much worth the enjoying. It is the land of the Templars and Cathars restored for the modern visitor.

“Do not miss it!”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

I have visited the chateau on two separate occasions and greatly enjoyed it both times. It's a beautiful architectural experience in a lovely part of France. In addition to the historical/architectural elements, the owners have art exhibitions that rotate each year so that on each visit you get a different experience. I went with friends on an afternoon trip and they loved it as well. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the lush grounds and a really incredible spot. You will absolutely not regret it!

“Chateau Belcastel”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

This chateau in France is absolutely gorgeous. From the remarkable sets of armor to the breath-taking views, everything is impecable. The chateau has many exceptional features: the moat that circles the whole chateau (has carp in it), the drawbridge which takes you to the courtyard, the magnificent spiral staircase, the vines that crawl up the chateau walls, along with many more enthralling things. The people there are so affable and are always ready to help you with information/questions you may want to know. Set above a beautiful village with amazing food, this chateau is a MUST SEE if you are going to, or are in France.
