“Really disappointed”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

This mother and daughter team need to learn about good customer service. Our patience was tested time and time again in the single night that we stayed there. On arrival the hotel was closed even though we had rang ahead to confirm the check-in time. We had booked a Standard room overlooking the courtyard and had requested online that it be a quiet twin room. We were shown to the wrong room; the room over the front door and it was a wet night so you could hear every car that passed. It was also a double. When we said that we were in the wrong room we were told the room we had booked did not exist anymore and if we wanted a room on the other side of the hotel we would have to pay more. We did and were shown a nicely styled room but very cold - and still no twins in sight. We settled on that but the bed was rock hard and we did not sleep well. The beautiful vaulted restaurant hadn't been heated - instead they showed us to a little room by the front door in which they had lit a fire. The wine list was very expensive for this area and considering we were in Limoux country there was no cremant (the local version of champagne) on the menu; only pink champage at 10 euros a glass. We had been to a lovely restaurant for lunch (the Tantina) and the pink cremant there was 2.50 a glass! The meal was very bland: overcooked veal steak in a weak stock with cubes of carrots and swede - slightly reminiscent of school dinners, and you needed a microscope to see the slivers of cheese served. I hardly ever write a review but I HAD to this time. It is a beautifully furnished hotel but the owners need to sort out their attitude towards their clients. They did not take any responsibility for the mistake regarding the room and were verging on rude towards us even though we were really polite and patient. And it ended up an extremely expensive experience. A real shame as we had really looked forward to staying there.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper request room 3 - it's a superior room so a bit more expensive but wor...

Our six day stay mirrored many of the previous comments. Mirepoix is a beautiful walled city and the hotel is conveniently located near the old quarter. Lots of restaurants and shops close by and the supermarket within walking distance. Hotel was unmanned on arrival and a short delay ensued after phone calls. Room was pleasant but noisy from the rubbish truck at 4am and the shrill noise from 2 stroke motos. The shower was nicely fitted out but lacked a door or sill to keep the water in. Had a lovely meal in the cave restaurant. This contrasted with foraging for breakfast which was a odd affair searching for food. In spite of a staff member everything was self service once you found it and worked out how it worked.
Hotel lacked a communal space like a garden or lounge. Parking on street was at a premium however a garage is available provided the entrance does not get blocked by an illegal park. Helpful front desk when manned.

We stayed here in August during the peak tourist season. It is a very small, typical French hotel with lots of atmosphere. As the nearby street parking was full, staff moved one of their cars for us to park directly outside the hotel, which was great as we had quite a lot of luggage. There is wifi in the shared areas of the hotel (although it doesn't reach quite as far as the bedrooms). Our very compact bedroom was missing a TV remote which we didn't really mind as we could operate the switches. Our room overlooked the street and the bin men come in the middle of the night! Otherwise a lovely historic town and good location to get a flavour (lots of great restaurants too) of the place!

The staff are the greatest assets of a hotel and the receptionist at Les Ramparts was friendly and went the extra mile to be very helpful. The hotel is located in a typically French shady tree lined street with plenty of free on street parking. The room was very clean and comfortably furnished. I guess that the only thing that would have helped would have been air conditioning. Our room was at the front on the first floor and it was a bit noisy at times. Having said that, I would recommend Les Ramparts and would definitely stay there again

Room Tip: Rooms at the back would be quieter.

We checked out via the internet numerous accommodation options in and around Mirepoix in the months prior to travelling. Finally settling on Hotel Les Ramparts. To say our expectations were exceeded is an understatement. Very comfortable with charming and accomplished staff. The superior room was certainly superior and excellent value. The in-house restaurant offered a high standard at reasonable prices...suggested local wines also recommended. One should note that this small establishment has specific hours of reception...outside these hours the front entrance is locked although guests can come and go using a supplied code number. Highly recommended.

We have spent two one-night visits here recently: one in early December and one just before Christmas. Don’t be put off by the rather undistinguished exterior because inside the hotel has been very tastefully decorated, retaining many original features of the old building (beams, terracotta floors) augmented by modern, understated decoration and furnishings. Our “standard” rooms, up two flights of stairs, were a bit small but perfectly serviceable, with comfortable beds on both occasions. The bathrooms were modern and clean, but the walk-in showers lacked doors, resulting in lots of water on the bathroom floor.

We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant and can recommend it highly. The cuisine is modern in style, very well-prepared and, most importantly, consistently delicious. The service was friendly and efficient.

Our breakfasts were typical French hotel buffets (bread, cereal, yoghurt, cheese, sausage, juice and coffee), but with better than normal ingredients; the cheese and sausage weren’t “industrial” but were locally sourced organic products.

The hotel seems to be well-run with very welcoming and helpful staff. I found I’d forgotten a UK to French power adaptor; when I asked if they could help, in short order I was provided with one to borrow .

Overall, we enjoyed our two stays very much. Our return visit testifies to our good experience the first time around. Given the modest price, Les Remparts delivers quite good value. Since our visits were out of season when the hotel was almost empty, I can’t vouch for what it would be like in high season. I hope we can try it again this summer to find out.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are a bit small but very reasonably priced.

Very friendly and attentive staff, and the best meal in 6 weeks travelling in France and Spain (and incredidbly reasoably priced). Standard rooms are small at only 19m2 but this is made crystal clear on their website, so if he'd wanted a bigger room the previous reviewer should have booked a superior room at 25m2, and not complained here. On-street parking right outside the hotel. Restaurant is closed Sunday evening and hotel is on a (very quiet) one way street, two minutes walk from the medieval centre of town, and 45 minutes drive to Les Grottes de Niaux 13000 year old cave paintings. Do not miss out on this superb hotel.
