I visited this place when it was called Mgahinga Safari Lodge. It is now called Nkuringo Safari Lodge. Both the names are singularly inappropriate. It is neither in Mgahinga nor near Nkruringo. Is it a plot to mislead or just careless?
On my 2003 visit I felt its location superb and the access could have been better. Service was slack and there were problems with service levels.
I tried again this June and found the access better and there was evidence of improved service.
The Tents are on raised platforms and now have glazed doors instead of zipped flaps. This lets a lot more light into the tents. Check the platforms are level or the bed will need adjusting with bricks to stop you rolling out.
The facilities out back could do with upgrading as they are showing signs of wear and tear if not downright neglect. There is a now vehicular access closer to the Lodgings which was nice.
Food was nourishing and well cooked. Cold Beers from the Fridge. A minor grumble was the desire to 'do it by candlelight' . I prefer to see what is on my plate and they were happy to leave the lights on when requested. AND turn off/down the Musak!!
The plot is on a small spit of land jutting out into Lake Mutende about 30 minutes or so from Kisoro. Views over the lake to the Virungas in Rwanda is a classic African scene. The location is beautiful but sadly much deforestation has taken place since my last visit and it was not as birdy friendly as I remember. There is a decent swamp area further round the lake but much of the road is now linear villages and shambas.
There is a boat for trips on the lake etc., at 80,000TZ a time. A bit pricey.
Overall a nice place for a few nights but be prepared for an early start if you are Gorilla Trekking.
