We stayed at Karungi Camp while on tour with Footsteps Through Africa and we couldn't have received a warmer welcome from Yoly, Gordon and the team - we were their first overland guests! The campsite is beautiful, in the valley of Rubuguri, surrounded by the mountains, which are home to the mountain gorillas. There are birds and flowers and chameleons everywhere (amazing spot for bird-watchers), the location is only a short drive from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. There are hot showers, and a stocked bar, good food, and friendly and helpful staff. What's more is that Karungi Camp is designed to bridge the gap between tourists and locals, and the bar and restaurant is open to both visitors and villagers, so we truly felt part of Rubuguri, and not as if we were just passing through. This felt like the heartbeat of Bwindi and we did not want to leave!

Room tip: Campsite is great for tent-travellers; rooms are simple & comfortable with ensuite bathrooms for more privacy.

We arrived by bike in the evening and were met by the friendly staff who immediately offered us drinks. We had ordered food so it was ready for us, but first we had hot showers in our comfortable room. Food was excellent, hot and came with extra chapatti (we needed to refuel!). The bar was filled with a mixture of Ugandans and Westerners on different projects. It was perfect to be sitting with a variety of people, enjoying the evening fire and talking about the different things we all do. Our night was very comfortable. The rooms are clean and mosquito nets are provided. We had ordered breakfast early for the next morning to continue with our cycling and it came exactly on time. We had a great night and would thoroughly recommend it to all types of traveller - back packer, camping, mid range, it met all our needs. Thank you.
