This is the closest place to Stone Town to snorkel. We booked a boat for the 2 of us for $35 through one of the many travel agents in Stone Town. It was very rough water. We tried snorkeling before we stopped on the island but cut it short because of the waves and having to dodge jelly fish. We then toured the island at our own pace, enjoying the tortoises and touring the old quarantine site. There's not a whole lot to see, but it's interesting. We tried snorkeling again after our visit and saw quite a bit. We were in control of how long we stayed and felt like we had seen enough after about 4 hours.
Be aware that getting in and out of the boat entails wading and climbing slippery ladders. They are used to clumsy tourists but I wouldn't recommend it if you have any mobility problems.

We went with our son to see the turtles and all enjoyed including the boat trip out. It is pretty low key just lots of turtles and a few buildings - there is a very pricey cafe but okay if just for a drink. If you do its worth going through the cafe on to the terrace by the sea which had a beautiful breeze and view.

Most people combine it with swimming or light snorkelling which looked fun but we had ear infections so not allowed in the water. But even without it we were glad we went.

Organise a trip with your hotel, a travel agency or try to bargain directly with the boatguys on the beach next to Forodhani Gardens. We paid 20$/person for a trip that basically goes for as long as you want, that price included the entrance fee to the Island (4$/person) Prison Island doesn't offer alot more than the actual turtles although if you want lunch there is a restaurant at the luxurious resort that is located on the Island. The turtles are amazing and ranging from a 189 years old to just a few days. It's well worth it I reckon and the snorkeling around the Island is pretty even though I'm sure there are better places around the Island.

Prison Island is about 20 m. with motor boat from Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. I went there as part of an organized half day tour and after the visit we had the opportunity to snorkel near the island, but if you only wish to visit it, you can just take a boat on the beach promenade of Stone Town.

In Prison Island there is an interesting ancient building that was built to be a prison but instead became a quarantine hospital for sailors arriving to Zanzibar on infected ships; now the building is a hotel. However, the main attraction is a reserve of giant tortoises from the Seychelles that were having a great Dionysian party at the time of my visit.

For Spanish speakers:
- "Senorita tortuguita, es usted muy muy bonita"
- "Oiga senor tortuguero, no sea tan zalamero."
Mas, con sus zalamerias, consiguio lo que queria.

It is about a 30min boat ride to Prison Island from Stone Town. Lonely Planet quoted much higher prices but we arranged through our hotel and it was US$40, for 2 people for as long as we wanted. This included return trip and entrance to island. The island it self is very small and the facilities are for the hotel guests only. The main reason to go is to see the giant tortoises. You can stand and have photos as much as you like, which is nice. There's a lovely beach to wander along, where the boats all moor, but then you may as well head back to Stone Town. All-in-all we were gone about 2 hours-ish. There is a restaurant on the island too and the meals seemed similar prices to Stone Town.
