Prision Island was interesting but not as historical as I was expecting. The Tortoises are worth seeing, as well as the beautiful peacocks that roam the island. Beautiful spot to go snorkelling as well.

The decision was to be made between going by ourselves very cheaply or doing this rather expensive tour seeing prison island and also the beautiful white sandbank close by with food included. We opted for this tour with Nakupenda and were not disappointed. It was fantastic. We went on a wooden boat, roughly 30-40 people but one didn't feel it. (I was a bit worried at first.) It was mostly Italians and therefore we had our own English speaking guide. At Prison Island he gave us a very good tour with very interesting information. As there were onnly the 3 of us, we were able to move around away from the crowds. The stop on PI was maybe 1hr but that was enough. The turtles were cute and I was able to take enough photos.
Then we went on to the sandbank were a sumptuous lunch was prepared with fruit, ice tea, wine, coffee, samosas and other local specialties and grilled seafood. It was very good. On the sandbank we had about 3-4hrs and lots of time to snorkel, chill out and eat. Surprisingly the coral is very good there (despite the regular boat traffic). One can snorkel off the beach and see clownfish, banner fish a few others. The water is gorgeously clear and blue.
It was a really good day out and we were so glad we did it. It was definitely worth the $50. $60 is the official price.

Nice afternoon trip out to prison island - trip in small boat, some snorkelling and the tortoise sanctuary. Children loved it. Touch of history re Slave trade. Negotiate on pricing :-)

apart from the giant tortoises and the old slave prison and the really good opportunity to do some extra snorkeling there is not much to see. The island itself can be seen in one hour- visit the turtle place included. The view is really nice and it was only half hour dhow trip which we took in front of Tembo House Hotel to the island. Our guide told us that the island that is private will go into the hands of the government by the end of the year.
If you have seen most of the attractions in Stone Town, Prison Island is an overall interesting place.
