Palace Museum (Beit al-Sahel)
Ranked #7 of 41 things to do in Stone Town

My friend summed it up "The worst $3 I have ever spent". The palace was once a beautiful palace but certainly not anymore. It is horribly neglected, there is dust everywhere, the furniture is creepy and filthy, and adding an Ikea table in the middle of hundred year old chair sets did not help.

It is well worth a visit as Stone Town is relatively small and you can easily visit this as part of your old town tour. It will add to your knowledge of the rich Zanzibar history.

Our guide did his best to make this place interesting. It has remnants of what must have been a glorious past. A little furniture in need of repair, some old photos, a room dedicated to a princess. A visit of 45 minutes is plenty. They really need to receive some UNESCO money to develop it.

This is a fun museum to see how the rich and famous kicked back in Zanzibar over the years. IF you go early in the morning when it opens (8-9) you'll have the whole place to yourself. There's great beach front verandas for all of your beach photos too.

The Palace was the home of the Sultans that used to rule Zanzibar. The furnishings and configuration are very middle eastern in styling and have been preserved nicely, especially for a tropical climate. The main attraction is the disowned Princess, who married a German and was exiled from the country by her family.
