“A very good hotel to explore Stone Town”
Reviewed August 2, 2010

A very nice hotel at the beach in Zanzibar Stone Town. Very nice decoration and in good condition. Only the rooms could be bigger. Breakfast is served on the beach terrace with a beautiful view.
Very quite hotel, even that it is very central. You can reach all the sights of Stone Town within a few minutes. A ideal location to explore Stone Town.

We have had a very nice week in the Hotel. The place, in the middle of Stone Town, was nice and defiant for all of us. The rooms are excellent with very nice furniture and good beds and bathroom. The managers and the personell were very kind. We had daily a very good breakfast. The dinner on our last day was realy more than excellent.
Conclusion. It is a good place to be for an acceptable price. We will come back.

This is truly a unique hotel with only a few rooms in the heart of Stone Town. The rooms have names; not numbers. Our room consisted of an entry hallway leading to a large bedroom and a bathroom that may have been even larger. The furnishings and decor match the exotic location. The intimate dining room has excellent meals, although we found the dinner to be quite expensive. We considered staying at the Serena (which was indeed very nice from the lunch we had there), but are glad we settled on the Zanzibar Palace. I can't think of another hotel that was quite so memorable!

We found that the Zanzibar Palace Hotel to have an old-world experience of Arabian nights, beautifully hand-made carved furniture and Persian carpets. And careful restoration both within and without the hotel buildings has an elegant ambience of centuries past. The owners and staff were friendly, very pleasant and helpful, without being intrusive. Cleanliness is a feature. We found their restaurant overpriced for dinner but excellent breakfasts were served. Gail Robbins

We recently stayed at the Zanzibar Palace Hotel. Lots of character and friendly welcome. Staff were extremely accommodating.
Regrettably there is a BIG but..... upon arrival we were shown a dinner menu and after being informed that the local restaurants were poor we opted to eat in house. We ordered a bottle of house wine, advertised as costing $27. The 'house wine' recommended by the chef was brought to the table and we enjoyed our meal. The following morning we received a bill for $172!!! The bottle of wine provided had been charged at $58. The food was nice (we both had a fillet of Kingfish) although it does not justify its cost given that a similar meal could be purchased in Stone Town for one fifth of the cost. Be warned as we foolishly didn't question the lack of a costing on the menu when we agreed to eat in house.

I'd like to start off by saying I'm not a person with "unrealistic expectations." We stayed in multiple tented camps during our safari with hot bucket showers and no sinks, and still loved the experience and enjoyed ourselves. Thank goodness we only stayed in Stone Town for one night. Zanzibar Palace hotel is located in a scary alley. We stayed in the "Rosewood" room, which was worse than a cheap motel in the United States. We climbed three flights of rickety wooden steps to get to the room. The tiny bed and couch were obviously really old and worn. Bathroom was small and minimal. The prices for dinner were ridiculously expensive...around $60-$100 per person for food you can get elsewhere for $15-20. We wanted to do breakfast at 7am because we had to leave at 8. This is before their usual breakfast time so they only served us half of the contents of a usual breakfast, even though we paid for a full breakfast ahead of time. Stone town itself was a waste of time, poor, dirty, scary, and the market had the same souvenirs that we had seen in Tanzania. Luckily we were only here for one night and the other seven places we stayed at were wonderful.

Very friendly, family run hotel. the perfect base to tour Stonetown. The room we had was delightful, well furnished and the bathroom to die for. Food quality is very good but that is true of Zanzibar overall. For a real atmosphere of Stonetown, this hotel is perfectly located in a quiet but very convenient area by the Big Tree and Mercury's at the top of town and close to the market - a must for visitors
