Really enjoyed our stay albeit short! The authentic decor within created a wonderful ambience.

We had the room with the enormous bath and shower, amazing. Very comfortable and we were also greeted with swan shaped towels and flowers everywhere!

There is an indoor fountain (original air conditioning system) and numerous beautiful lanterns.

Should not be confused with the new Grand Palace Hotel!!!

Room Tip: Sultan Suite

We stayed here for two nights between a safari holiday and beach holiday and were pleased we did. We stayed in the Sultana Suite which was great. An open bathroom, with loo behind a wall, with a big corner bath and shower. The shower gel etc that was provided was lovely. The bed was really comfortable but quite high with mosquito nets, I'm pleased I didn't fall out - it would have been quite a drop. The staff were really friendly and attentive, and were very helpful with tips of where to go in Stone Town. My husband left a shirt hanging up to let the creases drop out and when we returned to the room we found it had been ironed! The bar is small and we didn't see anyone else in there, we felt we couldn't stay in there too late but bought drinks to take up to our room, so not an issue. Breakfast was fine, and enough choice - lovely coffee! We were surprised with a glass of champagne each in our room one evening, I don't know if this was usual or whether somewhere along the line they had found out that the trip was my 50th birthday present. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Stone Town, as long as you can manage stairs.

The glowing reviews were what got me interested in staying here, but even despite the comments I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed my stay, from the level of care from the staff to the character of building. The Dutch managers were excellent - professional, attentive and informative. They gave me a good overview of where to go and what to see in Stone Town, and recommended a great tour (not from their own brochure, incidentally). The staff are also great – very welcoming and friendly. The building itself is a treat; my room was the Nadia room - a smaller room with great traditional furniture – and throughout, the hotel takes the old building and enhances its features through the decoration used. Throw in the cooked breakfast to order, and tea in the morning and afternoon delivered to your room, and you can’t really do better. Overall, a great place and if I get the chance I will stay there again!

We stayed for 1 night and I can honestly say I wish I had stayed more. Room was really amazing, I can't remember the name of the room but it was cracking big bath I mean big with a decent shower, bed, was as usual with most hotels outside the UK, HUGE, and pretty comfy. It was a little noisy but having a balcony over the street, where we could smoke and watch the street, more than compensated for that. Breakfast was good to, by far the best hotel room I've stayed in yet.

We stayed here in the Arabica Suite on the top floor on the first night of our honeymoon.

The place is truly beautiful, with a wonderful Ottoman charm. The owners are Dutch and are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. We arrived a few weeks after a well-publicised incident in which two UK girls were attacked in Stone Town. The owners were quick to offer some local information on the incident and were reassuring and realistic about the (very low) risks. This went a long way to calming my wife (for whom this was a first trip to Africa). The local staff were enormously friendly throughout and the trips that the hotel arranged were excellent.

The suite itself was gorgeous, with a wonderful four-poster bed (with a mosquito net), reclining cushions area and some lovely furniture. In the evening the room was incredibly romantic (and the glasses of wine on arrival and towels made into swans were lovely touches). The location is perfect, right in the middle of Stone Town. The views from the suite were extensive (although much of it is of tin roofs you can also see Africa House and listening to the sounds of the prayer towers from the balcony on the evening during sunset is a wonderful experience).

Room Tip: The hotel has some very steep stairs up to the higher levels. It was not at all a problem for us, bu...

Centrally located in the heart of Stone town. Large rooms that have a nice charm. Very friendly staff that go out of their way to make sure your stay is memorable. We were upgraded on our return visit, which was a very pleasant surprise indeed. Keep up the good work, Robert, Mark and the rest of the wonderful staff. Janette & Woody Adelaide, Australia

Room Tip: Kijani is a great room

The Zanzibar Palace Hotel was truly 'other-worldly'! The rooms, which were large and comfortable, were almost out of Arabian Nights, except that the facilities were modern! The furnishings were sumptuous and tasteful and well maintained. The hotel is set in the heart of Stone Town and so one is constantly aware of life out there, yet cocooned within a safe place. The staff were from start to finish friendly, informative and efficient and nothing appeared to be too much for them in order to make the stay there a good experience. Robert and Mark were excellent hosts and the staff were just so friendly and apparently happy in their work, which is always a good sign! I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel - we were unfortunately only there for two nights, so try to stay a little longer.
