Breakfast and lunch and dinner at the hotel was so lovely with many choices,I like butter chicken alot. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Internet was free and high speed.
I highly recommend this place.

You can't beat this hotel for location as it backs onto a beach where all the tours to prison Island leave from and it's really close to all the sights and sounds Stone Town has to offer. It also has a lovely swimming pool.

Unfortunately it really lacked in other areas. Most notably in atmosphere. There is a lovely area by the pool and looking out onto the beach where you can sit, but there just isn't any atmosphere there. Most of the time we were there, there seemed to be a manager hovering around and he had a TV tuned onto a news Chanel which was fairly loud, not really what you want in the background when chilling by the beach trying to enjoy the beautiful view...a bit of music in the background would be nice.

We also found the breakfast to be really poor, although this meant we tried a lot of the lovely cafés which are nearby.

Another problem we had was with the front of house staff, they weren't very friendly and really weren't helpful when we asked a few questions about local attractions.

The rooms were clean and had good air con and an in room safe. The bathroom was pretty drab and unfortunately the water pressure was so low it was impossible for my wife to be able to have a proper shower!

All in all this hotel is average, and if it wasn't for the location it would probably be below average. A few small changes could make the world of a difference though.

If you are looking for a modern, generic hotel this is the wrong place, if you are looking for a hotel which has a personality and is old school glamour this is the place for you.

I booked the hotel on a reccomendation from friends and I am glad I took their advice. The hotel has been lovingly restored and is stunning.

The beach is not the best in the world, but if you are staying in Stone Town then you are not really there for the beach and there is great pool if you want to swim/ relax. You only have to walk out of the front door and you are in the heart of Stone Town.

The restaurant was great, lots of choice and the food was delicious.

Having spent 2 days in Stonetown at Tembo Hotel - On the beach front close to the "harbour" I wasn't expecting much initially so I was pleasantly surprised when the aircon worked, the bed was comfortable (after my boyfriend had us moved - we walked into a room facing a construction site with a mattress that had been torn and filthy) - I guess if it wasn't for the horrible view the mattress would not have mattered as much - but alas the super hotel staff and my super boyfriend had it sorted in no time, so we had a room facing the pool with a little (and I mean little)veranda and facing sort of toward the sea too- We actually had the best of both worlds and a lounge just outside our room which is obviously not often used but outfitted in the most regal luxurious old time original art and craft and furniture of the 5 star hotels of yester year, the hotel was refurbished from a old burnt down original building , and I would say they did a good job. It was like a little Oasis with working aircon a charge plug - we couldn't figure out how to use the flat screen TV though it did appear to work. Needless to say after walking around in stone town drinking up all the sights sounds smells etc. we ended up at the bar next to the hotel as no alcohol is sold in Tembo Hotel - but it was literally next door so - no problem.

We had no noise problem at Tembo that I could recall perhaps just the kids in the afternoon in the pool a little. Other than that the breakfast was fulfilling - just identify the Real coffee from the local coffee and Ask for eggs, and you will get.

Lets just put it this way - the experience was original if, even like something out of a novel about Zanzibarian History, it was Ottoman era kind of 5 star. I really will go back to Tembo.

The staff are friendly but try and learn their language at least - thank you and no thank you and you will be treated with the same respect. Oh and ladies please take along the sleeved shirts and the dresses/pants that cover your knees, it's out of respect that one wears it....and you'll be treated with respect then too.

In terms of tipping the staff they Really don't expect it, but if it's in your nature to give them something and you have to give they are happy to accept. If there are some of them that "hang" around for tips politely thank them and say goodbye showing your intention to start relaxing on your own in your room.

Manners begets Manners.

People in Stonetown do not use alcohol on the streets, I think if they do it must only be in their homes or restaurants. True in every destination there will be the opportunists and beggars, just be polite and tell them your intention or that unfortunately you can't help/ Make something up, or you don't want a guide you would like to explore alone. If you make an issue of it, it will become a problem and you will NOT enjoy your experience.

Going to the night Market in front of the old fort and I think town hall - almost like the "seafront" you will find bargains - and NEW out of this world traditional foods, but know your currency conversions especially your first night.....

Stonetown is an experience you cannot miss, and really lives up to the fact that it's the oldest "working" town in Africa.

Perhaps avoid the "tours" as my tip because you might just have an original unique experience and get to know the people. Oh, and ask before you take pictures.

Room Tip: Move if you need to, just ask for the manager and explain why you want to move and the staff will go...

Great place to stay ...close to Stonetown exploring and excursions. Situated right on the beach on one side and straight into stowntown on the other. Great Zanzibar flair and furniture surround you. Reminescent of old Zanzibar. The staff and management went out of their way to make our stay memorable.

I experienced Tembo Hotel as a great place to stay with very friendly and helpful staff. Felt like a second home and with its conveniences of a pool and the ocean it's for me the best choice in Stonetown with a great value for money.

We stayed here in October (2013) and found it ideally located for excursions and exploring the stone town itself, beautiful pool, spectacular views of the ocean from the room, charming Zanzibar furniture and great breakfast near the beach as you see the fishermen and boats pass by.

Room Tip: Suites overlooking the sea offer spectacular views of the ocean
