It's my first time staying at a hotel in Zanzibar and starting from day 1 until my last day, Tembo hotel made sure my family and I had a spectacular stay. Everything was well organised and beautiful, starting from the hotel to the room, food, service and the staffs. However, I would like to thank Haji and Ali for always being there when we needed them but most of all, the manager of Tembo hotel was just really helpful and gave us amazing ideas on where to go and where to eat.
WELL DONE and looking forward for my next vacation to Zanzibar again at Tembo Hotel.

On sight, the hotel is an impressive and historic building right on the seafront. As an old merchant house the rooms evoke a bygone era of exotic splendour with the added bonus of a good sized pool in the inner courtyard and a wonderful first floor drawing room overlooking the sea (which is hardly used). The staff generally are quite charming from the porters to the cleaners to the slightly hassled waiters but something is not quite right and you quickly realise that despite appearances, no-one is actively managing the hotel. The results in endless waiting for food orders, the worst breakfast i have ever had in Africa (pizza - really?), some poor attention to deep cleanliness in the bathrooms (see other reviews of grotty plug holes) and I am very sorry to say, a rat running across reception. I imagine it is related to the family of them scratching in the roof above our (lovely) bedroom). This place could really be something special - either find a new manager or give him some hospitality training. Having stayed elsewhere in Zanzibar, I know they can do better.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pool is nice if you can marry it with a view of the sea like we did.

The hotel has a lot of historical features and fittings, situated on the beach front it is a great location. Restaurant looking out to beach is very relaxing, food seemed rather expensive only had dinner here once.No alcohol is allowed in the hotel ,however there is a bar next door that served nice food & drinks.. Walking distance to many things to visit , Not far from Freddie Mercury's home, lots of shops, lane ways to explore

Historic hotel - some great photos in the lobby of the refurbishment. Rooms are traditional rather than luxurious, but comfortable bed with mosquito nets and evening turndown spray service and Zanzibari style shower was interesting! TVs in the room and free WIFI. Only thing I didn't like about the rooms, 2 rooms on the ground floor by the pool: there was a vent in the bathroom which led on to something like a service corridor. When you were in the bathroom you could hear the hotel workers shouting out to each other. When the bathroom door was closed you couldn't hear anything in the bedroom, but -rather disconcerting.

Location is great! You get to eat breakfast overlooking the beach and in the evening you can watch the local boys gymnastics. There's a nice swimming pool and sunbeds on the beach. A couple of minutes walk to the Old Fort.

The hotel doesn't serve alcohol, but next door is a good bar restaurant serving beer, wine, cocktails and good food in a lively atmosphere.

At present there is a massive new hotel being built next door, which will be a Park Hyatt. It is enormous and will between Tembo House and the Serena. There is some noise, but it didn't affect us at all.

Overall- a slice of historic Stone Town in a good location with a great views for excellent price. Enjoyed our 3 days here.

Great location - close to everything. Rooms big with big beds and showers. Very old fashioned but well maintained. Private beach and pool are great. Also has cable tv with multie movie channels which was unexpected. Wifi not great. My initial room had no wifi signal and when I brought this to their attention was upgraded to a pool side room with no extra garage. Wifi signal was there but horribly slow - better than nothing! Overall a good place to stay!

Stayed for 2 nights with our family including 2 children 8 and 10. Great location, interesting collection of furnishings, quirky and charming rooms - we really enjoyed our stay. If you're flexible and wanting some local charm then this is a great place to stay. Food absolutely fine we had breakfast on both days and lunch on one. You do need to be patient at breakfast or avoid peak times but if we had any requests or things had run out generally the staff were happy to help. Can be a bit noisy with The Livingston bar / club next door but we enjoyed popping next door for an evening beer. We also sat out late at night enjoying the sea and empty beach just by our room and were well looked after by the security guards. Kids loved the pool, the beach beds and the local gymnastic competitions on the beach. Only negative was the shower which had hot water but no pressure, but totally liveable. Definitely preferred Tembo to some of the more "clinical" hotels...we would return.

Overall we were happy with our stay because the building is beautiful and located on the beach right in the heart of stone town, but rooms were not clean enough: filthy headboard, hair clumps in plug hole and visible poo on loo brush!!!! Otherwise we enjoyed the charm of this hotel and staff very much. Perfect for a short stopover stay.

Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean.
