“Right on the beach,in the middle of town”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

We had a room on the 2nd floor with a balcony and vieuw on the pool and the sea.We probaly got what we paid for,as the room was small, the bathroom pretty hopeless with no water pressure and toilet damaged, mosquito net with holes, but the aircondition worked. The breakfast was poor, maybe we have been spoiled at the other hotels we stayed in in Tanzania.Mohammed Ali was the most grumpy and inhospitable manager on the floor.Maybe because it was ramadan, but that should not be an excuse. He defenitely earns a black mark. The hotel was very handy to explore Stone town.It is just a place to sleep. The swimmingpool was good value too.

Moved here after being treated not very well by a nearby property. The first night we had the ground floor room at the front of the property which was quite noisy but we were able to move upstairs for the rest of our stay. We did have problems with the wifi and I note that multiple guests did complain and management did fix the problem. Everything was clean and nicely done. Only complaint was the stale drain smell - we were on the top floor.

Linen was nice and beds were comfy. Air-conditioning worked well and the room also had a fridge and TV.

This hotel is probably the best situated one in Stone town, it is right on the beach as well as being right at the heart of the town.
The hotel is immaculate, the staff are very friendly and helpful.
I have stayed here many times now and consider it my home in Zanzibar.

Room Tip: No lifts in the hotel, only stairs service the first and second floors

We loved Tembo Hotel and would happily return. We stayed in two different rooms and both were lovely - nicely decorated and very comfortable. My wife and I found the breakfast delicious. The location of the hotel could not be any better - great views over the ocean and very convenient to forodanhi gardens and the streets of the old town. The pool was lovely and refreshing. We were extremely pleased with the service at Tembo hotel, particularly the front desk staff who took care of us when we arrived and found that our travel agent had booked us for the wrong dates here. They found us a room for the first night even though we didn't have a booking and on the second night moved us into their nicest room even though the mistake was not theirs. Loved this place, you will too

This Hotel has lots of character, with a North African feel. Unfortunately our room smelt of drains on arrival - emanating from the en-suite bathroom which was rather off putting and we were swapped rooms the next day. Our 4 poster bed had broken posts and the mosquito nets were fully of holes. The rooms were pleasant otherwise, many with a balcony overlooking the central plaza with a swimming pool. It fronts the beach and is very central in town so very convenient. However the food was not great and we were given glasses with black fingerprint marks over them. We did not feel the welcome was particularly warm.
I wouldn't write it off completely but it could be better.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the sea or overlooking the plaza

Apart from broken toilet seat, broken bed base, no water pressure enough to wash or shower with, and a multi-storey construction site opposite, the reception manager's reaction and total lack of helpfulness with our lost luggage was appalling. Our luggage had been misdirected to another flight, and was several hours in arriving to the Tembo from the airport. My husband's medications and all his clothes were in the suitcase, so we were naturally distressed. The reception manager at the Tembo had in fact received our suitcase several hours previously but made no effort to let us know. When we enquired again at 8.30 that night, he informed us that our suitcase would not be arriving for another two days. When we showed our worry and distress, he then burst out laughing and said our suitcase was here all the time. He made a huge joke out of our worry and distress. Mean, cruel, and unprofessional behaviour on the part of a hotel employee. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone, ever.
