This hotel, was just what you imagine in Stonetown Zanzibar, warm and friendly staff and the rooms were amazing! I had booked us in an upgraded room and we were then given another upgrade - to this huge room with 2 balconies and a sitting room! It was so beautiful, warm and just what I wanted it to be !... Four poster bed, stunning wood and decorations...ahhhhh! The hotel was very quiet and in a great position, and loved being able to go to the roof to watch the sunset. We also ate in the restaurant which was lovely with great food!

Spent a month teaching English on the main land of Tanzania and planned on having a week in Stone Town. This hotel seemed a good choice and was happy with my decision!

Great decor - a real ' Arabian ' feel to the place, good breakfast and pleasant staff. Nice hot showers after my backpack style previvous accomodation.

You must go to the Tortoise sanctury which is the number one place to visit whilst staying in Stone Town - lots to do but these creatures are amazing, truly prehistoric. You take a boat from the mainland which takes you to the island - a real castaway : )

Pleasantly surprised. From the service, rooms, pool and location. Cannot find fault in this hotel.

Three of us has just completed climbing kili and was looking forward to a restful break. Zanzibar was the obvious choice. The choice of hotel was loosely based on price & location,

The hotel is located very to the centre of town, hidden on a small side road. The decoration is a nice mix of local decorations but with modern amenities. Service was great and the rooms very comfortable.

Great value for money.

We had a great room at the Dhow Palace, with two private balconies and a snazzy shower. The hotel also has a great location, right in the heart of Stone Town. However, I did not like the way they tried to sell us a tour of Stone Town at reception the minute we checked in. Then the porters undercut the management with their own offers of tours on the way to the room. A hotel should be a respite from touts, not a hotbed of them. The breakfast was OK.

Dear Joanne
Thank you for the review. I am very sorry by the way our staffs tried to sell you tours. Dhow Palace Hotel doesn't organise any tours. Therefore management is not involved in one way or the other. However, we are more than willing to help our guests to arrange tours by calling appropriate and reliable tour operators / organisers whom we trust.

I promise the management will be very strict with our staffs to avoid touts and cause hassle to our valuable guests i.e. not to sell tours unless guests themselves enquire about one.

Henceforth tour enqueries will be dealt with by a RECEPTIONIST ONLY and NOT by anybody else.

I hope next time you visit us you will definitely notice the changes

We stayed at the Dhow Palace for two nights in mid-August following a Safari and immediately prior to our return to North America via Amsterdam. The hotel was exactly as described on Tripadvisor -- charming, lots of character, clean and comfortable. The location is ideal if you want to stay in town and is very accessible to other attractions. We were upgraded to a larger room and the outdoor shower with complete privacy was a very welcome bonus. While we were welcomed with the 5:30 a.m. call to prayer from the local mosque, we knew to expect some "local charm" as we were in Zanzibar during Ramadan, so that wasn't an issue with the hotel at all. The cold water in the fridge was a welcome bonus as well. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Remember that the hotel is an old palace so one must use the stairs, but that wasn't an issue for us. All in all, the price was right and the hotel was loverly and quite distinct. We would definitely stay there again if we were to travel through Zanzibar. The hotel also arranged for transport to and from the airport for us at a small additional cost. Very helpful.

This hotel is just amazing! As soon as you step inside, it's like you are stepping in a different world and era. The decor is just beautiful, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. An excellent place in Stone Town, within walking distance to everything, and at an affordable rate. Don't miss out on a great stay with friendly staff in a unique town.

This hotel is in the heart of Zanzibar's Stone Town. It is decorated in the Ottoman style throughout, with wooden balconies, antique furniture and internal courtyards. The facilities are modern enough, however with beautiful showers in the rooms and a (very cold) swimming pool. Even the extension to the hotel has been done faithfully in the same style as the original and with authentic materials used by skilled craftsmen.

If you want a really quirky place to stay, this is for you. We stayed for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. But beware - the wooden stairs are very steep, so it's not for the faint hearted! The hotel is very convenient for visiting the places of interest in the town and there are visits available to spice gardens and other things of interest.

The members of staff were friendly and helpful - in fact they were an added bonus to the hotel. My only criticism is that serving food in the restaurant takes far too long. On our first night, we waited almost 40 minutes for our meal even though the hotel wasn't particularly full.

It's not the sort of place you would want to spend a week's holiday, but for a couple of nights stay, to take in the sights of Zanzibar, it's an experience hot to be missed.
