Having had a wonderful time at the Fundu Lagoon Pemba, we spent the last night before heading home at in the Serena Inn.
What a disaster from start to finish.
The hotel architecture was beautiful but no sooner had we sat down for a quiet drink as the sun set than a local band started playing and within 2 songs their dancers danced in amongst us requesting payment. Drinks at the bar were over-priced and there were no prices written on the drinks menus. The bar staff hung around that little bit too long waiting for a tip.
The restaurant was even worse. Service was slow and amateur. We were offered only the set menu, again with no prices and when I asked for an alternative menu I was told that it was a $15 supplement. The food when it finally came was awful, badly cooked and poorly presented. The price was again astronomical and as the staff could not understand english well enough, there was no point telling them the food was awful.
In the middle of the night we were both ill and then had to get on a flight home.
Both my husband and I have travelled extensively in the Middle East, Africa and South America. This was the worst hotel we have stayed in for years. It was a poor quality tourist hotel masquerading as a quality hotel and cynically charging extortionate prices for the privilege of getting food poisoning.
