I was at the Zanzibar serena Inn for 3 nights in Sept.this year.It is such a beautiful place exactly opposite the ocean. It takes us to another world nearly 200 years back! The reception is beautiful and decor perfectly matches the town. The rooms are also very classy and cosy though a little small, but the balconies with them are the icing with the hammocks on them! But the service is very slow! When we asked for a particular brand of beer,we were given another one and the bottle was opened without us seeing it.When asked for an irish liquer without ice,I was given with ice and billed for 4 when I had just two. Then I was told it was a larger quantity and had to fight to get it rectified.Food has no choices for vegetarians except for just 1 dish which also is served after nearly 45 minutes.a chicken tandoori is given to a vegetarian and then another 45 minutes to get the other order. All staff confused, not many smile and most of them with bad memories. The 4.30 pm tea and pancakes is the best part.

Room Tip: ROOM 52 : The best in the entire hotel as it has a protruding balcony and when on the chair on hammo...

The entire experience staying at Serena Inn was excellent. Good location, with a short walk to town centre. The rooms have great views over the ocean. The rooms are small, but you are mostly outside at the pool or in town. The swimming pool area is brilliant, with a steady supply of cocktails from the attentive staff. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Very good experience.

The room we had on the second floor right at the very end was very nice and had sea views. The toilet needed some attention has it wasn't secured to the floor properly and wobbled when sat upon. Other than that the room was lovely and did the job. The pool was great as was the location and views from the outside pool area, restaurant and bar. The staff were nice, friendly and busy. We ordered lunch upon arrival around the pool area cafe. Unfortunately, it took over 1 hour for a cold seafood salad and a burger to arrive (after it had been chased up twice) and 20 minutes after that for the bill to arrive - so lunchtime service either in the cafe or restaurant isn't great (our friends decided to go to the restaurant for lunch, they thought it would be faster, not). They do the very best birthday celebrations to house guests - lots of joyful, meaningful, beautiful and fun singing and dancing around the birthday person - made a real fuss and truly enjoyable to listen to and watch for everybody. Breakfast was terrific, buffet with lots of choices and excellent service from the staff. The restaurant has amazing views and is extremely pleasant way to start the day.

Room Tip: They have rooms overlooking the pool and ocean, so to get the best of both worlds ask for one of tho...

We went to this hotel for a lunch. We were disappointed by the service and the rudeness of the staff. We had a plane to catch and we ordered our food explaining that we should leave at 1 o'clock. 30 minutes later nothing was on the table, we asked the servers and they were lost just telling us "it is coming".
At 1 o'clock, we had to leave; they made us pay for a food we never received... Service charge included...
It was shocking as food was not even ready in the kitchen... Our order was lost but we had to pay.
Gladly this is not common in great Zanzibar. We will be back but we will definitely not choose this hotel to stay in. Stone town if full with lots better places.

I was looking for a combination of: beach hotel, close to Stone Town (this is in the town), local/historical architecture and reasonable price. This was the correct place!, In addition the personal is very friendly, the restaurant is fantastic, with nice view to the beach and the pool is very comfortable. The rooms are very nice with arabic style and nice views. Absolutelly recomendable.

Room Tip: View to the beach, good air conditioning is crucial.

Last january I and my family stayed in Zanzibar at Serena Inn, very nice hotel in a renovated old colonial building, just the building for itself is a great attraction, the rooms are quite comfortable, the staff are very kind, the restaurants have a very good food, the atmosphere is great. The location is very good in the old town.

The Serena Inn is a delightful and charming renovation of two historic buildings above the beach at the westerly tip of Stonetown. It's an ideal place from which to explore the town. Service is excellent, rooms are modern where it matters and yet full of character. Lots of mahogany.

There's a small pool and a wonderful terrace for drinks at sunset. Dinner is good.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view if you can.
