We had no reservations at Maru Maru, and were looking to spend one night in Stonetown before heading back to the states. Maru Maru turned out to be one of the best places we stayed during our three weeks in Africa, except for the fantastic tented camps in the Serengeti. First, the air conditioning worked well and was on all night. The water worked. The beds were comfortable, and there were no cockroaches! Yea! The best part of the hotel was the restaurant on the roof. It served some of the best food we had on the entire trip. Overall, the hotel was a bit expensive for what we were used to, but the value was decent.

I stayed for one night in February and arrived late and left early but this is my experience:

Bad points
- Booked via hotel website, 2 days prior to arriving received confirmation email but when I arrived they couldn't find my booking. I had to turn on my tablet and show them the confirmation email before they begun to try and resolve, then I had to forward the confirmation email to them after logging onto their wifi. It eventually took 20 mins for them to find me a room, staff didn't seem to know how to deal with the situation as they were calling the staff member who deals with the online bookings and telling me it was very busy in town due to the music festival, all this at 11pm not the best start.

- When I eventually got to my room it was nice but main problem was the shower, despite turning the water heater on and leaving it for 15/20 mins the water was still luke warm both that evening and at 7am the next morning.

- Breakfast - I got there just before the start time but within 15/20 mins there was 4/5 tables with people ready to be served and the 3 staff were struggling to cope. The eggs I ordered took quite a while and at the point I ordered them I was the only one for breakfast, overall impression was disorganised and slow service. Food itself was ok but as somebody who looks forward to a relaxing breakfast this was a disappointment. The choices available for breakfast were: 2 hot items pre-coooked I couldn't tell what they were though, you can order eggs, sausages, bacon and I saw somebody with an omlette, toast & preserves, 2 juices, 3 cereals conflakes, chooclate pops & museli plus 6 choices of danish pastries/muffins/doughnuts.

- When I left I asked for a taxi to the airport and this time I was left waiting again as staff didn't have change for USD as the bureau de change wasn't open yet - I wasn't paying with a large denomination note so I put this down to poor organisation

- Mini bar fridge in my room wasn't turned on.

Good
- Bed was really large and very comfortable and bed linen was of good quality
- Bathroom was modern and clean
- Roof terrace is nice and handy to pop up there to buy water for the room
- Room was large and very clean and building is lovely

Overall I found my stay a little stressful and I was only staying one night, if I visit Stone Town in the future I wouldn't stay here.

This hotel is comfortable and with staff who are friendly, pleasant and willing to help. Its not a top of the range hotel, but neither are the prices. However, it has good bedrooms and bathrooms and a pleasant terrace bar and restaurant where you can watch the sun go down over the sea. The staff are friendly and helpful. Its a good place to stay.

This place would have got all 5's if it wasnt for the fact that you cant actually get wifi in you room. Otherwise location, style, decor, cleanliness was top notch for the price. The bathroom is a luxury given the area you are in. Its right in the heart of the market and shopping part if Stone Town and right next to the best places to eat as well. Id recommend going b&b here and taking a 2 min walk to the nearby reastaurants.

Stayed 2 nights in April 2013, given the expense of the hotel I feel that my expectations have been met. The location is central, food and drinks are great, rooms are lovely with mosquito nets on beds, showers are fantastic and hot!!!!!! Hotel is clean, safe and the staff friendly and helpful.

A lovely new hotel in a central street in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The rooms are spacious and the beds are really comfortable. The hotel has lots of Tanzania artists work on the wall which is a nice feature. It is modern - even has a lift/elevator - but is in a traditional Stone Town house. It is a blend of modern and traditional that really works. The roof top terrace is a great place for sundowners with views out to see and all across Stone Town. Friendly staff. I mistakenly thought there was a pool at the hotel - just a nice fountain in the courtyard. Highly recommend. We took two rooms - one for our children and one for us - and both rooms were great and had sea views. There are loads of dark, dingy hotels in Stone Town - so this bright, modern hotel is a real find.

Room Tip: Try and get a room as high up as possible - were were on the 3rd floor so had see views.

The hotel stands out from the rest. Beautiful facilities reconciling antique architecture with modern facilities. From the service at the reception (where you are welcomed with timely cold fresh towel and passion fruit juice) to the largest rooftop bar and lounge in Stone Town, Maru Maru gets five stars for service, value, sleep quality and cleanliness. Management and staff are exceptional too. The rooms are spacious, clean and safe. Ask for a room with a window facing the street or the inner patio -not facing a concrete wall The restaurant in the rooftop could see some improvement, breakfast was rather run-of-the-mill and our black-peppered tuna once came with no trace of pepper and overcooked tuna-can style. Still, the rooftop terrace bar and lounge makes for a wonderful place to retreat and marvel at this unique city.
