“Tanzanian music in former customs house”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2014

With my tourist friends we stumbled into the Dhow Countries Music Academy to find a music recital happening on the top floor overlooking Zanzibar's harbor. The academy's building is square and old with an interior patio. First, on the second floor we bought CDs of academy musicians--wonderful authentic recordings of local music. Second, we filed up to the third floor where a live music recital presented different types of local music from drums to sad, fado-sounding vocals to belly dancing. Everyone welcomed us tourists. We enjoyed ourselves listening to good music and entering into the social life of Zanzibar residents. The academy also has zumba, capoiera, and yoga classes.

“Dhow Countries Music Academy - Flamenco Performance by Ricardo Gracia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

Magical evening at the Dhow Countries Music Academy. Ricardo Gracia from Spain performed live romantic flamenco recitals. The show started with beautiful traditional Taarab music performed by the students and teachers of the academy , followed by Ricardo's performance and ended with a fusion piece between the academy students and Ricardo's. Truly an evening to remember.

“Wow factor and best Zanzibar music...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

The dhow music concerts are the best and great value in Zanzibar. This is very good as it also encourages the students at the music academy.

There are many concerts every week and check out, there is a big banner outside the school.

“Amazing find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

We were thrilled to hear about this music academy which strives to keep alive the traditions of African music. We heard a fascinating concert of Taraab music preceded by an authentic and well-prepared African meal. A real treat! Don't miss these Thursday evening concerts on the waterfront...
