I really like this hotel. Good price, reliable internet 95% of the time, walking distance to Mercury's in Stone Town (or the whole city if you want). There is hot water for showers but you have to turn the switch on outside the bathroom door. The owners are really cordial. I asked about a shower curtain and they promptly installed one. Safe hotel lockbox which is always good for peace of mind. Owner even drove me to the airport when I had a real issue with a plane ticket. He charged for fuel but not as much as a taxi. And he waited there till I had my new ticket. I stayed 4 nights total. Free rooftop breakfast.

I travelled to Zanzibar with two colleagues for work and chose Funguni Palace Hotel for price and location. While not directly in the heart of Stone Town, it is extremely close to the ferry terminal and not too far to walk to Stone Town either. As we had a number of meetings in the area, it was perfect for us.

The owner and staff were very friendly and helpful, with advice and small things such as letting us borrow phone chargers. The breakfast in the morning was basic but served quickly and the wait staff were also friendly. I hadn't realised the hotel had WiFi so was pleasantly surprised that this service was also included.

I can see how proximity to the fish market might not be everyone's cup of tea, it is bustling in the morning and some fishy smells (although nothing too overpowering or pungent), but for some this equally a positive thing. Personally, I enjoyed my breakfasts on the roof watching the street before going around the island. With regards music, there was some (also to be expected, we stayed Friday and Saturday nights) but surprisingly finished around 11pm so didn't disturb sleeping at all.

It's by no means the fanciest option nor with the most modern fixtures but is good value for money. I wouldn't stay here if you're looking for a flashy Zanzibar getaway but if you just need something simple, check it out. I'd especially recommend to those from Dar who just need somewhere to stay for the night.

The location is bad, near the fish market so imagine the smell. The rooms are OK, the included breakfast is terrible, tasteless and the cutlery/glass/plates are dirty. The worst thing about this hotel is the service. The staff are very rude. We had booked 5 days and they demanded that we pay the whole amount and so we did, after the first day we gave notice that we would checkout the second day. We were told that we are going to be refunded 2 of the remaining 3 days and we agreed on that. Upon checking out they refused to pay the amount. First they said they don't have access to the safe because the owner wasn't there, then they changed their mind and said that we will not get anything back because that was the policy. The local police couldn't help, we were told that only "fools" pay upfront.
At 50$ for a double room there are plenty of hotels in better location and friendly staff. You have been warned.

Found this hotel when we had to stay an extra night in Stone Town at short notice due to Nairobi Airport fire. $50 for double. Everything worked - there was plenty of hot water, quiet air conditioning, decent sized room, comfy bed, TV in room, lockable cupboard (with key!) helpful staff, taxi there virtually as soon as we ordered it. Chilled soft drinks on sale at reasonable price in reception. Decent breakfast: fruit, eggs, toast. Served on rooftop with interesting 360 degree views. The location is close to the port along quieter streets so I wouldn't recommend it for a single traveller who wanted to go out and about at night.

We stay three nights in this hotel.
In three nights we couldn't sleep at all : music, animals, light... In the bathroom the water balloon was not working. We didn't have hot water and the bahthroom was completely humid.
They did the room only the first day of our stay.
We booked and paid for a shared bus to leave StoneTown but they forgot to organize it.
The hotel is far from the night animation in the center and the area is not safe (no lights, empty small streets...).

While in Zanzibar and out hotel hunting we found this place and it came across as a nice , comfortable and a budget hotel....with good wifi,...hot water, huge rooms and breakfast included... which was served on the terrace which has a wonderful view and a lovely breeze blowing all throughout the morning hours ...the management was friendly and warm. This place is walking distance from the stone town approx 800 meters .....good choice if u want to be in the hub of attractions and yet not pay too much...

Room Tip: A Great Budget option with good wifi and ideal location ....!

We had 4 nights at Funguni Palace Hotel. The owner Ali was really helpful with telling where we could eat and what to see in Stone Town. He can also help with transportation and tours.
The hotel has a good location, 10 minutes from downtown. The hotel is nice and clean. The price fits with what you get in Stone Town.
