facilities are also beautifull, the caffe is videly opened to the street, so, if you pick a table by the french window you can eat your lunch and watch the busy life of the Stone twn street pass by you.

We went for dinner here because of the raving previous reviews, and felt rather disappointed.
You do get to taste a lot of different local dishes, but compared to other places on the island (though not necessarily in Stone Town) it is not all that great. In addition, it is a rather unthoughful mix of very different tastes. The sea food is grilled right there and then on the roof top, or comes from pre-prepared containers (no issue there, as this is normal in any kitchen), but that roof top kitchen is below standard in space and hygiene. Plates are washed between dishes, but we neither saw soap being used nor the steam of hot water... The placemat was dirty from the start.
The view is indieed nice, but that is only because of the elevate position, allowing you to see the city, the sea and the sun set. The city roofs are not pretty (think of any Tuscan village): mostly rusted metal plates.
The service was not that great. Very little explanation on what you get on your plate (we had to keep asking), and when one of our prawns clearly was bad, there was no apology or corrective action (the prawns were carefully counted for the number of guests, as was all the food).
In essense, they seem to have found the ideal restaurant situation at Emerson, but not for the guests: all tables are prebooked and prepaid (so no risk there and easy planning), with only one menu that is served simultaneously (very cost effective). With that in mind, the price is high for Zanzibar.
Bottomline, if you have only one night, it is OK, but know that there are other roof tops with that view, and with more comfort and choice.

We ate at the Emerson Spice in Stone Town and we found it amazing. Great and original food, very good service and terrific location. The restaurant is at the roof floor so you can see all the city around you and the sea. At 8pm start the Koran prayers all around...a moving atmosphere.
Food is quite spicy (as the name says) and it's better to make the reservation personally (you can go there in the afternoon, then have a tour around Stone Town and come back at dinner time.

The hotel and restaurants are charming and full of character, the food was exquisite and the staff were absolutely charming. They showed me around the hotel when I expressed interest in this, even though I was only a restaurant guest.
