As night time approaches vendors unpack their foodstuffs, cooking utensils, paraffin lamps and lots of enthusiasm. They trade until 22:00. During the day time no unexpected traveller could foresee what will happen at that same spot during the night time if you havent seen it before. The night market is not only a tourist attraction but also the place where locals come to buy their dinner. There are lots of vendors with different types of local zanzibar food that are prepared. Be aware that you buy fresh food and see it prepared before your eyes, otherwise it might be stale and not stomach-friendly (especially the sea food - lobster etc). Very interesting as some vendors have sales men that want to share his story why you have to buy food from his table. When you do buy food, you select what you want, then it is mostly grilled on a fire (sometimes only heated) and the price yoy pay is dependant on your choice. Mostly all food is affordable.

A great place for travellers to have fresh sea food.be careful you are not conned ..as they can sense a traveller a mile away..we almost got conned for lobster at 10,000tsh instead of 6000TSH but due to friendly nature of zanzibar people we sorted it out..try the great banana nutella pizza!! great!! and good sugarcane juice...for 1000TSH

We visited here during our backpacking travels and especially loved the park at night when the food market was on, we ate here one night. I would recommend finding the man making 'pizzas' and having one with Nutella chocolate and banana!

We visited the Forodhani Gardens in the evening, when it's packed full of local families. I would recommend going just as the sun is going down and then staying for a light dinner as all the food vendors turn on their gas lamps. Very atmospheric and it has a really great vibe. The food also was great (just make sure they cook it there in front of you and give it to you off the griddle). We had the Zanzibari "pizza" which is like a rolled-up pancake. Also hunt down the Zanzibari "mix" (some call it Zanzibari soup). This is less well advertised than the pizza but it's very tasty - it's like a broth with coconut chutney and potato dumplings. Scrummy.
