“Exceptional. Beautiful. A treasure in the heart of Stone Town!”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

Kisiwa House is such a treasure in the heart of stone town. I've been there twice! The decor is very Zanzibari and the ambiance is very relaxing. The staff is friendly and go above and beyond for their guests, a great representation of Zanzibari hospitality. The rooftop restaurant has the best view of stone town! The food is tres delicious, you won't dine there just once. It is so conveniently located close to a lot of the historic landmarks in Stone Town. A stay at Kisiwa House is something every tourist needs to experience, truly remarkable!!

Three nights in this hotel while visiting Stone Town. Great location and proximity to shops, the waterfront and restaurants. The Hotel was beautiful and the rooms spacious. The food was very good at the rooftop restaurant and the service impeccable. All staff were incredibly friendly. Wi-Fi is available at no charge. The only issue I observed was the tub/shower combo. In both rooms our group had, the glass tub enclosure leaked water onto the floor while showering. Just a bad tub design that created a flood in the bathroom each time you showered. Would definitely recommend others to stay there!

Came here after 12 days at two beach resorts on Zanzibar and it has been a pleasure. The rooms far outstrip the quality of the four star resorts we stayed in. The staff are very friendly, helpful and speak great English. The restaurant on the terrace is fab and the best food we had over the whole of the holiday! Finishing touch was an unasked-for packed breakfast delivered to our room the evening before our very early start at 5am the next morning. Would recommend this hotel to anyone

Unfortunately we only stayed at Kisiwa House for 1 night at the end of our safari and beach holiday which, judging by the other reviews, seems to be a fairly standard itinerary.
The hotel is decked out in Arabian-style architecture and furnishings and the rooms are modern, clean and stylish. There is a restaurant on the top floor, with great views across the town, although the food was fairly average.
The hotel is within easy walking distance of historical buildings, the waterfront, the markets and the slave museum, as well as several nice restaurants. We arranged a walking tour when we arrived, which is recommended, as the small, pedestrian-only lanes can prove disorientating. Once we had finished our tour though we were happy and confident to navigate to a restaurant, as there are several close by.
Great place to stay.

We stayed at Kisiwa House for one night in between our beach stay and flight home from Zanzibar. It was a great location and very well appointed hotel. Large rooms and they had air condition which was great for us before leaving to get on our long flights back to the US. The location gave us to the opportunity to meander through the streets of Stonetown and take it all in. We did not eat dinner at Kisiwa House. We ended up going to the Emerson Spice for dinner, but a local had told us that the food was pretty good at Kisiwa House. We had a very early departure in the morning and the staff set up our taxi and made sure we up and ready.

I'm researching a third visit to Zanzibar and came up with BHH. I stayed there on my own about eight years ago and again with my adult son about six years ago.
There are a small number of rooms on two or three floors. The beds are 1940's wire and about 4 feet above the floor. There was a device like an old Singer sewing machine in the window space which was a fully operational air on. The bathroom fittings were exposed and simple and fully effective.
The only meal was breakfast which was served in a small courtyard. No bar in house, unfortunately.
The quality of the other guests was really good. On for the chat and well travelled.

This place was like early colonial. I could imagine Hemingway hammering away on a manual .typewriter in the corner.
If you want to go back in time in a clean but somewhat austere manner, this is it.

We stayed here for 1 night between our safari and our beach stay. Kisiwa is a nice place but I am not overwhelmed by it. The service was fine and the room was good. We stayed in the Sulaima suite and it was well appointed and large however I felt like the bathroom was lacking. The pictures on the website and far more beautiful than our bathroom and I honestly, the shower water smelled... bad. The bed was very nice. I am thankful that we had the high floor suite because the noise from the streets was very loud. The location was convenient. The rooftop breakfast was delightful and we as the server.

Overall for 1 night it was nice but I did not find anything special about it.

Room Tip: As high as possible due to the street noise being quite loud
