We stayed one night in a Malkia junior suite on the second floor. The room was quiet with good air conditioning. The room was very spacious and tastefully furnished and the building itself a lovely, restored 19th century mansion. Location was excellent. We were tired post-safari and dined on the hotel`s outdoor rooftop deck. Setting was lovely but the food only average. At first we were daunted by the maze of streets of Stone Town but we quickly got our bearings and we would have tried other dining options had we stayed longer, including the vendor stalls at the Fordahani Gardens. However, we did enjoy our stay at Kisiwa House and the front desk kindly allowed us a free 90 minute late departure to time with our transfer to our beach hotel.

Room Tip: Malkia junior suite worth the extra money - looked a lot larger than the standard rooms.

Just completed my brief stay in Zanzibar and was a little skeptical when I saw the outside of the hotel that I would be outdated (it's an older structure) but could not have been happier with my stay, I ne every part of the hotel, the staff was firndly and competent. Room spacious, well appointed and maintained. Food was terrific and reasonable priced, loved unlimited free wi-fi. i highly recommend the hotel

We stayed 2 nights at Kisiwa House at the end of a 2 week holiday in Tanzania. The inn is in a nice location within easy walking distance to shopping and restaurants, and our room was quite nice with wonderful and reliable air conditioning.

On the not so positive side, there was practically no water pressure from the shower, although a nice bathtub compensated for that. The breakfast was good, but they only had instant coffee. Our room was on a higher floor but directly below the restaurant, so there was a lot of noise from moving furniture both evening and morning. Worst part is the checkout is at 10AM, and they wanted $100 (!) to extend to 3PM. Since we had a late flight out, we were forced to wander around in the heat and humidity for several hours.

Stone Town itself is interesting with some good shopping, but generally very chaotic, noisy and very very HOT in Feb. Next time, we would probably skip it all together and just go to the beach.

Room Tip: Don't pick room 10 or any room on the second floor. They are directly below the restaurant and v...

I have stayed in a number of hotels in Zanzibar and this one was just average. The staff was very friendly and the hotel is conveniently located, but it was way overpriced for what you get. I paid $180 USD for one room for one night for myself and my four year old son. The room was average; nothing like the one pictured on the hotel's website. The food is average. There is no pool or other particular outstanding amenity. If you are particularly interested in having two sinks in your bathroom, then Kisiwa house may be for you. If not, for half the price, you can get the same quality lodging ten meters away at the Dhow palace. I recommend staying there instead.

Two days in Stone Town on our way to Pemba. We chose Kisiwa House with little idea of what we were booking, but we were looking for good value in a central location. Not only did we get that, we found a 1840s merchant house transformed sensitively into a beautiful hotel. Tucked down a side street, the first thing you notice are the stunning Zanzibari doors, studded with brass. The building has dark wood staircases up to a roof terrace restaurant, where you also have your breakfast. Rooms have tall ceilings with fans and air conditioning and very comfortable beds with a wooden frame like a four poster and mosquito nets. Yet we hardly noticed any mosquitos, despite normally being a feast for the beasts. The hotel is perfectly located for walking around Stone Town - right in the heart of the maze of streets and alleys. We did not do the spice tour, having heard mixed reports, but booked a private walking tour - and our guide Choum was excellent. We also watched the sunset from the terrace bar of the Africa House Hotel and had a stunning dinner at the Emerson Spice Hotel top floor restaurant (a fixed price menu with Green Papaya Ceviche, Lemon Grass Calamari with Turmeric Sauce and Cardamom Mango, Shrimp Ball with Vanilla Sauce, Peanut Butter Fish with Sembe Chips, and a sweet of vanilla ice cream and passion fruit sorbet!). We will definitely be back
