This place was the cheapest on offer (at 30USD per night for a couple) in Stonetown, but awful value by Tanzanian standards, but I guess that is to be expected.
We got a bit of a raw deal: our bedroom was directly behind the check-in desk, which made us feel a little exposed and unsafe, as the front door to the guesthouse was never really closed. The room was small and dark with a cell-like quality and the mosquito nets were full of holes (which we attempted to cover using plasters - I'd recommend bringing a needle and thread!). It was, however, clean, and it felt like home within a few days. There was, however, hot water in the shower.
The manager was neither friendly or unfriendly, and breakfast was the most basic we had in Tanzania - mixed fruit jam on toast and tea or coffee, plus a mini banana (usually a fried egg is offered).
We found out after the first night that the steps of the Haven serve as something of a communal gathering area for locals, having heated debates, in the early hours of the morning. The noise was very loud, but it might have been better on the first floor.
The location is pretty good though - you're right at the southern tip of the historical maze-like centre of Stonetown, and close to tons of really lovely eating spots. We'd recommend having an evening meal on the roof terrace of the Dhow Palace Hotel.
A Haven this is not. If I were to come back to Stonetown I'd splash out on a less budget place just for a few days - I guess it was good value for Zanzibar standards but it simply wasn't all that nice.
