“A luxury hideaway in Stone Town”
Reviewed September 16, 2010

This hotel has only been open for 6 months and still getting established. We had the mezzanine room which was spread over 2 floors (large bathroom and small sitting area downstairs and bedroom upstairs.) The bedroom opened onto the roof terrace/restaurant which has immediate sea view! The restaurant is quiet so this does not cause disturbance in the room. The room was very clean including bathroom, towels and bed linen.
The staff at the hotel were extremely welcoming and helpful.
The best part was the restaurant. Our room rate included breakfast which was possibly the best breakfast I have eaten anywhere in the world and the best location. We also ate dinner there both nights-we choose set menu which was 15 USD for 4 courses and the food was very impressive. (There is also an regular menu)
The room cost 269 USD per night - pricey-but in line with all the top stone town hotels.
The downsides were that at the time we were there the spa was out of order as it was being refurbished.
The room was a bit on the dark side unless you opened the door to the roof terrace but this is zanzibar style and probably not a fair criticism as opening the door does not compromise your privacy either.
Think the atmosphere at the hotel of peace and quiet was perfect for couples wanting to spend time together after the hustle and bustle in stone town. I hope it stays like that as the hotel becomes more popular. However, the location is perfect for walking to all the main sites of the town.
If you do not stay there, I would highly recommend the restaurant which is significantly more reasonable than the 236 Hurumzi rooftop restaurant that features in all the guidebooks and the food is fantastic!

The location is right by the Gardens, so prime location in stone town, right off the water. From the moment you enter the hotel it is clean and elegant in a way that befits Zanzibar. Eastern style but with western comforts and cleanliness. The rooms are very sexy and kept incredibly clean, the hotel was opened spring of 2010 so it is very new and modern with all it's comforts. They have bathrobes, slippers, The most comfortable and enormous beds I have ever slept on, let alone in Africa! You even have a percolator in your room with tea which no other place on the island I stayed at offered. I loved staying there, the hotel staff even during Ramadan were so helpful even at late hours would go out of their way to get me anything I wanted. The rooftop restaurant and bar is one of the most charming, and the complimentary breakfast is beautiful and delicious. I stayed at several hotels in Zanzibar and none even compared to the beauty, quality, and hospitality of Seyyida. I would stay there the whole time if I could, definitely would love to stay there again. Don't stay anywhere else in Stone Town!

The room at the hotel was one of the basic deluxe rooms, but it was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated. The view consisted of a concrete wall however.
The location is good, close to all amenities, however, the alley ways to reach the hotel are dark and a little intimidating at first.
The huge downside was the noises from the restaurant from about 11pm, our room was directly below it and the staff were moving furniture until very late and started again very early. The staff member I told didn't do anything about this, which was a shame and annoying considering it is by no means a cheap place to stay.

Yes, I know Zanzibar is part of Africa but it has a rich colonial past, thanks to the Omani Arabs, and in part, it is this that the hotel has used as inspiration for its interior decor, which is tasteful and luxurious.

We were very fortunate because we had a spacious room with a balcony that afforded a beautiful sea view (room 201), however, there was very little consideration to wardrobe space, so if you have loads of clothes with you you may well have to live out of your suitcase somewhat. Note, I happened to catch a glimpse of another room which had a rather dire view of the dilapadated wall of the next door building, so choose your room carefully !

The only negatives we had, and they are minor ones at that, were that it was initially quite difficult to find by road. It is practically next door to the Palace Museum and the closest a car can get to it is by parking at the other end of one of the alleyways, which you then have to walk through to reach the hotel entrance. However, the plus side is that it is in a good location, with plenty of places to visit within short walking distance.

Another minor negative was that we had an early morning flight to catch so we got to the restaurant as soon as it was due to open, to catch a quick breakfast, but nothing was ready, no tables, no chairs, no food. But then again, we were in Africa, so it came as no big surprise. However, they did try to make amends by giving us some pastries and juice to get us on our way, which was appreciated. And the breakfast we had had the previous morning had been very good and the service excellent. Oh and I almost forgot, the restaurant is located on the rooftop and has a beautiful view. A great way to start your day.

One other thing worth stating was that I did not see any sign of a lift. They may have one and maybe I just didn't see it but all the rooms seem to be on upper floors, so if you are not very good with stairs you may want to check with the hotel first.

Overall we had an all too short but lovely stay here and I would definitely go back. The staff were very helpful and polite and judging by our short curious visit to 236 Hurumzi, not only was there a prettier view from the Seyydia rooftop but the Seyyida staff were definitely better trained and more customer service orientated than those at 236 Hurumzi.

Hotel Seyyida is a great boutique hotel situated in the centre of Zanzibar’s Stone town. The rooms are light and airy simply yet tastefully decorated. The decor has Arabic and Indian influences, drawing on Zanzibar’s rich cultural heritage. Some rooms have glorious sea views of the Indian Ocean. For the best sea view in Stone town, head to The Hotel Seyyida’s roof top terrace. It is a wonderful place to eat, or just to relax and have a coffee and soak up Stone town’s unique atmosphere from a bird’s eye view.

Zanzibar’s stone town is a world heritage site and a walk through it’s narrow streets and alleys is fascinating. The gentle bustle of the town’s market traders, shops and coffee houses and the Palace Museum are all just a few minutes walk away from The Hotel Seyyida

The staff are informal polite and extremely helpful and accustomed to catering for both business and holiday visitors. It is an ideal place to start any visit to the island and is not far from the airport. The food is extremely good and the hotel tries to use much local produce. I’m sure that you will enjoy your stay as much as I did.
