the bad news first: my friend and I ate kebab, so-called chicken kebab, but we could not agree whether it was chicken, fish or any other (to us unknown) small bird. The naan bread, samoosas, rice, potatoe dumplings all were 4 star. Cheap and pleasant, surroundings stunning. We felt soooo safe, coming from South Africa, this visit on an early sunday evening and everybody was out and about, local families, visitors and not many tourists. Food is cheap and plenty. Good value for money

In the evenings this place is bustling with food carts all selling kebabs and sea food delicacies. It's a great place to sample a variety of kebabs and mix with locals (usually food vendors).

Forodhani Gardens comes alive at night with vendors selling all types of food and delicious homemade sugar cane juice, pressed while you watch! Our hotel guide gave us some traveler's tips. Be wary of some of the seafood, as it may have been sitting out all day or for days. The Zanzibar pizza is made fresh and is delicious! Also for the juice, make sure to have yours collected directly from the machine, without going into the ice bucket. You can get great food for very cheap but bargaining can be a must. A really unique experience, right in the heart of historic stonetown!

My wife and I have just returned from Zanzibar and heard much of the night food market. we count oursleves as experienced travellers and have had 'street before' so went there with an open mind. However as a previous review said the sales pitch is retentless, we did succomb to one particular person called FISHERMAN JOHN' , and bought food that and got a price but didnt pay , our first mistake. We were duly served, still hadn't paid , second mistake. So finished the meal, it was luke warm at best, so this is where thefirst problem occured, we went to pay and you got it the price was hiked sky high, so instead of caving in we stood in amonst the locals arguing our point, after ten minutes we decided to walk away, but gave this FISHERMAN JOHN what we thought the meal was worth. As we went he proceeded to follow us with a sidekick. Not wanting them to see where we staying we took retreat an Indian resturarant , explained the situation about being followed, the staff were brilliant, and allowed us to stay until they had gone, then head guy got his doorman to escort back to our hotel

Second problem has since develped since saturday 10th Nov, on the sunday were ill, and have been pretty much since, to the point where my wife has got possible salmonella poisioning, presribed anti-botics and sign off work for 7 days

So, yes we learnt some valuable lessons but wanted to put this up for others to take caution from

SO PLEASE BEWARE OF THE CHARACTER CALLING HIMSELF FISHERMAN JOHN

Forodhani Gardens is a seaside park opposite the Beit al-Ajaib. It must have been the centre of old Zanzibar. There are seafood stalls there now at night. You can probably get a good seafood meal, but you can easily be ripped off. The salesmanship of the stall-holders is intense and relentless.
