“A nice place in stonetown”
Reviewed August 20, 2014

Had a very good experience staying at this hotel. The main advantage is that it is near to the seaport so as soon as you get down from the ferry you can staraight away walk to the hotel without having to book a cab. Rooms are good with average amenities. But so are the rates. The breakfast is good but was the same for all 4 days of our stay. They can definitely add variety in that. The overall ambience is good nothing spectacular but we were anyways roaming everywhere and just came to sleep.

Room Tip: They have just 12 rooms so you can choose any.

The hotel is a short walk from the ferry terminal and some of the other major attractions in StoneTown. Rooms are comfortable and breakfast on the roof is decent. The decor mixes some Zanzibari style with modern features to give a slightly odd but reasonable ambiance.

Its difficult to compare hotels in the third world with those in the first world. By local standards the Asmini is good. By international standards it looses a star for me. But you go to Zanzibar to soak up the local culture not western style hotels. There are quaint quirks like the solid wooden doors which don't really fit and the tiled bathrooms which are a bit old and showing signs of ware. Then there are the romantic bits like the four poster beds with all round mosquito nets, roof fans (and aircon), original art depicting local town scenes from the past and the dining area on the roof of the building with its view of the ocean on the one side and the chaotic streets and rusting roofs on the other. Breakfast on the roof was basic but good. Staff are very friendly and efficient. Built around the idea of the old Arab houses in the town with central courtyard and open passages to the inside makes the rooms on the lower levels noisy as they are right above the foyer.

Room Tip: Get a room on the upper levels because there is noise from the foyer.

We stayed at Asmini Palace i December 2013. The staff was nice and the service was excellent. The location of the hotel is perfect; near Forodhani Gardens, Beit el Ajaib, the sea front etc. Roof top restaurant serves basic meals with a nice sea view.

Juma, Mohamed, Casiem, Evelyn.
Beautiful friendly memorable staff at Asmini Palace. Couldnt ask for a more welcome (karibu !) Stone Town experience. They arrange everything you need just a phone call away. Clean basic rooms with own balcony. Clean bathroom with fan, shower only have to hold on to the shower head otherwise it sprays all over - not sure if this was limited to my room only. As soon as you get the hang of it and remind yourself you are here for a different experience, it could be fun and part of the whole Stone Town experience. There is a tap about the height of your hips in the shower and you can also kneel to rinse your hair with both hands :) luckily lots of room in the shower. No safe in the rooms but you are able to lock your valuables away at reception when leaving the hotel. Basic breakfast served every morning on the roof top - enjoyed the variety of fresh fruits provided each morning. Missed my bacon though, but didnt really expect it anyway- after all a Muslim country. All in all, a great feel good experience. Would have rated 3 but the wonderful service I got from each and every staff member made me feel they deserve a 4.

Small room/wc and poor pressure in the shower. The bed was a little bit short for us 1,75 & 1,84 and hard.
Helpfull staff and also the breakfast was good except that they did not service real coffee just instante and that's not real coffee for 2 coffeedrinkers like we are.
