Sand Rivers Selous, Nomad Tanzania
Certificate of Excellence

Sand Rivers is not a cheap option, and I still do not know whether it was worth. They have excellent service, excellent rooms, excellent food!!! (not the usual lodge dinner what you become on safari), nice and friendly staff, etc. The location is great, but in my opinion it is better around Impala camp and Rufiji river camp (both cheaper accomodations), the activities were also fantastic, but these are great also at the other camps (walking safaris, boat safaris and game drives). What they offer in more is the spacious rooms (we stayed at suite nr. 2, it is huge with a small plunge pool, very comfortable, with proper bathroom, bedroom and living room. It has no real walls, so You can see and feel nature around You! that was the best about the room. But the concrete has some coating on, and as it gets wet, it becomes very slippery! be careful!!!) (the floor of suite nr.1 is wood, so this advice is only for suite nr.2). They have the best service and the best dinner. (Breakfast wasn't special at all.) So if You are a foody, or cannot immagine a few nights without luxury, then I can recommend this place, otherwise I think You can also try other camps in the park (which is the best in the country :-))

What a beautiful spot. First let me say that perhaps the wildlife spotting here is harder than elsewhere i have visited, maybe because of the size of the selous reserve. In hindsight if i were to stay again, i would choose to spend most time on the river or on short drives and chilling in the lodge. It would serve well as a final as a wind down from busier more "full on' safaris. This in no way detracts from the superb quality of the lodge and the guides. The public areas are truly lovely, spacious, relaxing with sensational views over the sand river. It is truly stunning and watching and listening to the wildlife whilst dining and chilling out was great. Undoubtedly for me, the highlight was falling asleep listening to the sounds of hippo grunting just below our banda at night and waking up in the middle of the night to the sounds of wildlife around us. Waking in the morning lying in bed and watching the sand river come alive at sunrise was just fabulous. Ah ...to be there now!

We were met by Nick (one of our hosts) who instantly made us feel very at home and as we were on our honeymoon and really excited about being in Africa his warm welcome was a great start to our 4 night stay.
Our accommodation was superb, we were fortunately upgraded to a suite (No 1, which is probably their best suite). Each of the suites have a separate comfortably furnished sitting area, a viewing deck with a plunge pool over looking the river and a huge bedroom, our bed was enormous and so comfortable it was untrue, the open aspect over-looking the river was a fantastic feature and nothing unexpected came in to our room the whole time we were there!

The lodge mess was as equally comfortable as our room and very relaxing, it too over looked the river, it was easy to spend ages just watching the hippo's and various birds that always seemed to be there. Nick and Jana were the perfect hosts, they made everyone feel very at home and able to relax. The whole dining experience was very good, from a cooked breakfast served in the bush, lovely simple lunches to superb evening meals, all our meals were prepared fresh using great quality food, brilliantly cooked, the local South African wine was very good too.
Our guide throughout our stay was Lazaro, he was excellent, very knowledgable and nothing was to much trouble. Every day we did something different, the river safari was spectacular and seeing a leopard sunning it's self on a rock by the river was amazing. The bush safaris were equally good, the highlight being able to get to within 10 feet of 3 male lions!
We knew from other reviews that Sand Rivers was going to be fantastic, but it's only when you have been there can you really appreciate just how fantastic it really is, our time spent there was very special, we would thoroughly recommend going.

I would highly recommend Sand River to be the last stop on any Safari. It's just so different and so serene. Actually, very relaxing. Nic and Jana do an amazing job and all the staff including our guide Lazaro who works for Nomad Tanzania was just wonderful. Keep it up! Asante Sana.

As already mentioned Mark and Chloe were indeed excellent hosts, truly motivated in trying to understand your preferences as quickly as possible to make you feel right at home – also making everyone feel welcome individually. It was quite impressive to experience, well done to both of them.

With few roads in the secluded park the game drives were about the excitement of working to find your more exotic game, working closely with your guide to spot the signs, which made finding rarer game all the more thrilling (leopards etc). The usual game is plentiful, but slightly skittish compared to other safaris; this is reflective of the wilder and less touristy nature of Selous. You really won’t meet another vehicle unless you go looking for it; it’s that private and peaceful. The land rovers are comfortable (4 seaters) with fridges and canopies which makes the game drives easy to copy with considering the terrain. The guides are very skilled and knowledgeable (all of them), very much an extension of the professional approach of the camp.
They offer various other activities, I’d recommend taking advantage of: eating lunch out in the park, fishing on the river (I don’t fish btw!), a safari walk, use the large pool which has views of the river (with a cold drink). The extra activities allow you to experience Selous in a way others can’t.

Accommodation is as expected and of a good standard. The suites are positioned along the bank with views over the river; they’re private and spacious areas to relax in. The cuisine as mentioned in other reviews is of a high standard as well; I can’t see anyone complaining over food (or wine for that matter), and they really do prepare/cook food to order and encourage you to request it how you like it - including allergies (eg I had pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast). They offer the option to have meals separately from other guests as well, whether it’s by the pool etc which may be important to some guests if they prefer an intimate meal.

All in all a fantasic way to experience Selous and with great hosts in an intimate camp.

Plush surroundings, every creature comfort, attentive staff. good food. Considerable flexibility in planning next days activities so that one never felt rushed or pressured into schedules. Very relaxed professional staff, knowledgable on all aspects of species, flora and fauna. Elephants and Hippos right by your room! Recommend boat adventure to Stiegler Gorge for new perspectives on alligators coming at you, hippos underwater. Great sunset/ "sundowners" on sandbar at end of day with guides and new friends, then boat trip back to camp.

Room Tip: Make sure that you get Joel as your guide--he was outstanding and knows every nuance of the trails...

I was lucky to stay in Sand Rivers in September 2013 as part of my fam trip and I had absolutely fantastic time- beautiful spacious bungalows with breathtaking views over the river Rufiji with hippos bathing in it was extraordinary, food was delicious, staff were very friendly and the hosts (Andrea and Alessia) were extremely welcoming, professional and really looked after me and all other guests. I highly recommend this place as an ultimate getaway to an unspoilt wilderness where everyone is extremely looked after and entertained.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
When Richard Bonham built Sand Rivers, he was offered any area in the Northern Selous. There were good reasons why this site, overlooking the mile wide Rufiji River, was the only place he wanted to be. At the heart of an intricate network of sand river channels, oxbow lakes and open plains, Sand Rivers opens a window on the private lives of Africa's big mammals. Creep up on elephant as they wallow in hidden lakes; drift silently by boat down the river at dusk or sleep out under the stars at night in our unique flycamp. With just eight open-fronted rooms looking out over the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers offers variety, spontaneity and a gradual immersion in a seductively wild part of Southern Tanzania. ... more   less
